  • PHASE 2 OF MOBILE MONEY INTEROPERABILITY GOES LIVE

PHASE 2 OF MOBILE MONEY INTEROPERABILITY GOES LIVE

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is advocating a review of the cap on daily mobile money transfers.

He explains this should reduce the turnaround time for businesses and individuals.

The Vice President made the remark when he launched the second phase of the mobile money interoperability on Wednesday, November 28, 2018.

“Given this powerful platform, it may be necessary to take a second look at the ceiling we have placed on the amount of money that can be transferred daily of course with the attendant security to ensure that the system is not compromised. This is to ensure that people and businesses will have the latitude to send and receive money across these platforms,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia added, “The possibilities are really major and I am counting on our fintechs to help lead the drive on our full utilisation of the platform that has been created.”

Between May and October this year, the mobile money interoperability platform had recorded 1.4 million transaction with value of over 140 million cedis.

The CEO of GhIPSS, Archie Hesse highlighted Ghana’s position within the global financial inclusion space.

“The three uniquely interoperable platforms; bank accounts, mobile money platforms, bank account, ezwich, mobile money platform have been connected making Ghana one of the few in the world to achieve a full universal interoperability in the sub region.”

Meanwhile the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison stressed the central bank’s sole concentrated power to control the mobile money space.

“As the sole regulator in the mobile money sector, the central bank will ensure that the right things are done to regulate the sector. We will continue to regulate and monitor activities within the space and ensure that all participants play by the rules.”

“The Bank of Ghana has a key responsibility to safeguard the financial system, to underscore the trust that is central to the financial system. It is therefore critical to ensure the confidentiality of transactions, privacy of data collected by the operators in this space including personal and financial data,” he concluded.

The phase two of the mobile money interoperability allows one to send and receive money from mobile money account to ezwich account.

  • IES BLAMES POWER CUTS ON OVERDEPENDENCE ON GAS

IES BLAMES POWER CUTS ON OVERDEPENDENCE ON GAS

The Institute of Energy Security (IES) wants the government to find pragmatic ways to purchase and store adequate quantities of alternative fuel for the country’s power generation plants.

The IES argues that may largely help in stabilizing power generation and supply.

The suggestion comes on the back of the recent erratic power supply that has hit parts of the country.

The Executive Director of the IES, Kwasi Anamuah Sakyi admits that the recurrent power issues are partly as a result of huge debts on the books of GRIDCo and some other power producers.

He says the government’s ability to secure funds to stock Light Crude Oil and other fuels, will be a preferred option.

“We believe that if we have stock of this fuel, we will need money to store other fuel sources as a backup and then we can only pray that the Akosombo Dam will have appreciable levels. We used to do about 60 percent of thermal while hydro was 40 percent. For the past week, hydro is doing about 50 percent,” he noted.

He added: “Anytime we have a challenge with natural gas, we should be prepared to fall on another form of fuel so that we do not get the shock.”

The government has adduced many reasons to the current power situation.

In all instances, it has strongly argued against the acceptance of the resumption of power rationing.

The Energy Minister, John Peter Amewu has suggested that the difficulty to transport gas from Takoradi in the West to Tema in the East, had partly accounted for the problem.

But for industry analysts, the core issue is the outstanding debt on the books of companies like GRIDCo and ECG.

ACEP casts doubt over Meralco partnership

In all these however, the Africa Centre for Energy Policy has hinted of some teething issues on ECG’s debts despite the coming on board of a private partner.

“If you have excess, ECG will have to deal with it and it is the government of Ghana that has guaranteed in those power plants…there’s a component of power that has to be sold and if there’s no nobody to buy it. The agreements that we sign, the cost is so expensive you cannot even sell it to the sub region because you are uncompetitive,” Director of ACEP, Benjamin Boakye emphasized.

Meanwhile in solving the issues perpetually, Mr. Anamuah Sakyi refers to solving the underlying causes of the legacy debts.

  • GHANA LOSING OUT ON EXPORT OF SERVICES—GEPA

GHANA LOSING OUT ON EXPORT OF SERVICES—GEPA

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA), Afua Asabea Asare, has stated that the country will continue to lose millions of dollars if the export of services like housekeeping, education and medical services are not formalized.

According to the latest Bank of Ghana’s Summary of Macroeconomic and Financial Data, total exports from Ghana as at October 2018 stood at $12.5 billion dollars.

But in an interview with Citi Business News, Madame Asabea Asare stated that Ghana could significantly boost its total export earnings, if services like teaching and medical support to the West African sub-region, as well as housekeeping services to the middle-east are better regulated.

“In the past, we have not focused on services export. But the export of services is happening informally. And we think that we should formalize this. When we do that we are even going to help the workers involved. For example, the people who travel to Saudi Arabia to work as house helps and get maltreated. If things were formalized they would be tracked and supported. Our teachers and medical practitioners are sought after everywhere. So, the question is how is GEPA coordinating all of this and ensuring that the services are provided properly.”

The CEO of the Ghana Export Promotion Authority, Afua Asabea Asare was speaking on the sidelines of the opening ceremony of the Second Export Marketing Fundamentals Training program.

The 4-day training program organized by the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA) from November 26 to November 29, sought to equip upcoming producers and exporters as well as experienced exporters with information and some basic skills needed to thrive in the current export space.

Participants are expected to receive training on topics such as export rules and regulations, packaging and labelling, export marketing research, among others.

  • COMPROMISING ON RULES COULD COLLAPSE FINANCIAL SECTOR—SENIOR MINISTER

COMPROMISING ON RULES COULD COLLAPSE FINANCIAL SECTOR—SENIOR MINISTER

Senior Minister Yaw Osafo Marfo has warned that Ghana’s financial system could face an imminent collapse if industry personalities continue to compromise the rules and regulations put in place to protect the system.

He made the comments at the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) 20th anniversary Dinner and Awards Night here in Accra.

The Securities and Exchange Commission’s 20th anniversary Dinner and Awards Night was the culmination of a number of activities outlined to celebrate the commission’s 2 decades in existence.

Formally set up in September 1998 as an independent regulator of the capital market in Ghana, SEC seeks to regulate and promote the growth and development of an efficient, fair and transparent securities market in which investors and the integrity of the market are protected.

Speaking as the special guest of honor at the awards and dinner night, the Senior Minister Yaw Osafo Marfo warned that the SEC and other regulators of the financial sector will witness a collapse of the system, if professionals within the sector continue to cut corners and compromise the rules and regulations put in place to protect the system.

“This is what I want to leave with my colleagues during the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the SEC. We should not cut corners. We should avoid compromises. Because one simple mistake can cause an institution to collapse and in fact the whole banking sector to collapse as well as the cause the whole economy of the country to collapse because of a compromise made by somebody.”

The Senior Minister’s comments follow recent cases of fraud and poor corporate governance practices which have led to the collapse of some financial institutions and the loss of about 100 million dollars in 2018, according to the E-crime bureau.

For the Director General of Securities and Exchange Commission Rev. Daniel Ogbamey Tetteh, it will take boldness on the part of professionals to do what is right to ensure that Ghana’s financial market continues to thrive.

“Let’s be bold to go for what is right, and what will be in the best interest of the institutions. And it behoves on all players within the financial sector in particular to make sure that we don’t compromise and we stick to what is right and do what is right to the best of our ability.”

The awards night saw over 30 awards being given to past employees, present employees and other instrumental personalities who have in one way or another helped in the growth of the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Dr. Kwesi Botchway got a special award for pioneering the formation of the Ghana Stock Exchange and Capital Market.

Hon. Osafo Marfo got the special award for providing policy support to the growth and development of the Ghana Stock Exchange and the Capital market.

Finance Minister Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta and Togbe Afede also received special awards as pioneers and founding members of the Ghana Stock Exchange and for the development of the Capital market.

Others including Mr. Ishmael Yamson and the late Hon. Kwadwo Baah Wiredu also received special awards.

MAKE AFRIMA SUCCESSFUL – TOURISM MINISTER

The Minister of Tourism, Mrs. Catherine Afeku, has urged Ghanaians to help make the country’s hosting of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) successful.

According to her, the four-day event, which will run from Wednesday, November 21 to Saturday, November 24 can only be successful if Ghanaians give it massive support.

In her opinion, the occasion is a good one for Ghanaians to show their hospitality as well as promote the Pan African agenda while selling brand Ghana on the international scene.

“Let us all be ambassadors of our nation because we are putting Ghana on the map and that is good for us. We should offer the necessary help to foreigners and be extra courteous.

The Country Director for AFRIMA, Francis Doku, entreated Ghanaians to vote for artistes nominated from the country. He said it will not be a good image for Ghana should its acts perform poorly when they are hosts of the biggest music event in Africa.

  • GHANAIAN YOUTH MUST RISE AGAINST POLITICIANS – SONY ACHIBA

GHANAIAN YOUTH MUST RISE AGAINST POLITICIANS – SONY ACHIBA

Veteran Ghanaian musician Sony Achiba has urged the youth in Ghana to rise up against Ghanaian politicians since they are the main cause of Ghana’s seeming retrogression.

Speaking in an interview in London, the Indian-styled entertainer bemoaned the way Ghanaian Politicians are toying with the country’s economy and mentioned that state of affairs is very miserable and one does not need a third eye to be told things are not going well.

He emphasized on the fact that right from when you drop from the airport, to when you get to your bedroom you will notice senior officers all begging for money literally due to poor service conditions and high cost of living

He described the parliamentarians who are supposed to see to the needs of their constituencies as comedians.

And for those who think is all about prayers, Sony Achiba said that, prayers cannot be used to solve economic crisis.

“When you travel and you see how these whites are managing their economy, you will realize that majority of our parliamentarians are comedians and to the pastors who always shift the blames on prayers and spiritual directions, we don’t use prayers to solve the economy “

He then advised Ghanaian youth to put more pressure on politicians to make Ghana work again.

  • PAY ME FOR USING “BOBOLEBOBO” – EVANGELIST IK ANING TO NDC

PAY ME FOR USING “BOBOLEBOBO” – EVANGELIST IK ANING TO NDC

Singer of popular gospel song “bobolebobo”, Evangelist IK Aning, has called on Former President John Dramani Mahama to compensate him for adopting his beat and words in the making of the Mahama version of the song.

His demands follow the use of “bobolebobo” in a campaign song for the former president that was played to climax the National Democratic Congress (NDC), 9th Delegate congress in Accra.

According to him, he was not consulted in the making of the Mahama version of the song and that the singer violated the copyright laws, hence the need to pay him some royalty.

“I have spent money on the song, so if you want the song, you should have informed me for us to sit and share the cost before you go ahead with your version.

My beat and words were adopted for the Mahama version, and the artiste who did that will surely be paid, so he needs to also give me something that I can use to produce another song” he said.

According to him, although he considers pursuing the case at the law court, his faith practically limits him in how far he can litigate the matter.

He said: “I will plead with Mahama to compensate me, I won’t use force but even the platform on which the song was played is huge and it has hyped the song. He has really helped me, because now people will start looking for the original song to play”.

Shatta Wale has stoked controversy with a statement he made at Reign Unveiled concert in London over the weekend.

When he realised some of the patrons started booing him offstage for his statement he said “no no, girls let me tell you, don’t get pissed. Midfielder Priscilla Okyere believes the Ghana team has overcome its fears of enormous pressure from the home fans at the ongoing 2018 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations.

The Black Queens were a bundle of nerves in their slim 1-0 win over Algeria in their opening group game.

Coach Bashir Hayford’s side, as a result, made several mistakes especially in attack to spur several golden chances.

Ghana thus missed the opportunity to record a much more convincing win against Algeria – creating doubts of their title credentials this early in the tournament.

But midfielder Priscilla Okyere feels the team is now better equipped to deal with the weight of expectations from the home fans going into their second group game against Mali on Tuesday.

“We’ve overcome the pressure on us,” she said.

“Ghanaians were expecting so much from us in the first game and it got us eager to score.

“We are very appreciative of this support and I’m sure we will do better in the next game.”

Ghana will seal qualification to the quarter finals of the tournament if they win against Mali even before they play their final group game against Cameroon on Friday.

Nana Addo to meet Gyan and Andre Ayew over Black Stars captaincy

Ghana President Nana Akufo-Addo will hold a closed-door meeting with Asamoah Gyan and Andre Ayew over Black Stars captaincy row today (Tuesday), GHANAsoccernet.com understands.

The crucial meeting will take place at the Jubilee House at 14:00GMT after the duo arrived in their native country following Ghana’s 2-0 win over Ethiopia in a 2019 AFCON qualifier.

The Ghanaian leader is determined to smoke the seeming tension between the two players and their allies over continuous banter over the leadership of the national team.

Both Gyan and Andre have consistently brushed aside claims of a power struggle in the team, but reports of disquiet between the two are just refusing to wash away.

Gyan, who is Ghana’s all-time top scorer, took the armband from Stephen Appiah but his reign has been punctuated with controversy amid claims Andre Ayew has been undermining him in the team.

It’s widely feared the tension between the two players could derail the team’s chances of ending a 36-year wait for an African title in Cameroon 2019.

Ghana President Nana Akufo-Addo will hold a meeting with the team captain and his deputy at the seat of government aimed at finding a lasting solution to the never-ending captaincy issue.
