Four members of the Kumasi Club escaped a custodial sentence

Four members of the Kumasi Club, a 93-year-old social club in the Ashanti regional capital, narrowly escaped custodial sentences after they were convicted of contempt by a High Court in Kumasi.
The four – Kwame Brenyah, Norman Owusu Barnie, Charles Asabere, and Henry Asumadu – were sentenced to two weeks imprisonment each upon their conviction.
However, upon an immediate application for a review of the custodial sentence by counsel for the respondents, Mr. Asante Krobea, the court presided over by Justice Ali Baba Abature reviewed the sentence to a fine of GH¢6,000 each or in default, they would go to jail for two weeks.

The four were found to be in contempt of the court for going ahead to hold a meeting of the club while there was a case pending before the court disputing the eligibility of the convicts as club leaders.

The Kumasi Club, formerly known as the European Club, draws its membership from highly trained professionals living in the Ashanti Region.

In his application for the review of the sentence, Mr Krobea told the court that one of the convicts was incapacitated while another was also very advanced in age.

Counsel said with the increased rate of the coronavirus infection, it would not be good to impose a custodial sentence on the convicts and therefore prayed the court to review the sentence to a fine.
Even though the applicants’ lawyer, Mr. Justice Abdulai opposed the application for review of the sentence and rather prayed the court to increase it, Justice Abature acquiesced to the application by lawyer for the convicts and accordingly reviewed the custodial sentence to a fine.

In March, this year, the chairman of the Kumasi Club and three others applied to the High Court to cite the convicts for contempt of the court when they failed to wait for the outcome of a pending case at the high court, challenging them as directors of the club and went ahead to hold a meeting to remove the applicants as directors of the club.

Four members of the Kumasi Club escaped a custodial sentence

Aside from this case, the applicants also averred that they filed a motion of injunction to stop them from going ahead with the said meeting and to await the outcome of the substantive case.
In his ruling, Justice Abature noted that the main objective of the offence of contempt of the court, was to protect the dignity of the court.

“It is in the general interest of members of the community that the authority vested in the court to protect them is not trampled upon. Any act which therefore seeks to emasculate the authority of the court should not be countenanced. The members of the community must at all times have confidence and hope in the authority of the court to deliver justice”, he said.

He explained that contempt of court was to prevent unjustified interference in the authority of the court.

“It is not to protect the dignity of any individual but the overall dignity of the justice delivery machinery,” he said.

Justice Abature added: “Thus, by the respondents having knowledge of pending action to stop them from getting involved in the administration of the Kumasi Club as directors pending the outcome of the substantive matter between them and the applicants on the affairs of the club at the High Court, but still went ahead to hold a meeting when there is a pending litigation about that very act, amounts to contempt of the court hearing the litigation at hand.”

A visit to one of our second cycle schools in the Greater Accra Region, Madina to be precise. The life of a journalist is always at stake since they go length and breadth of issues on board to bring to their citizens what they need to hear or know, from time to time, and Thursday, 9th July 2020 was not exceptional in a life of a journalist, who went all out to bring to the general public what they need to hear or know.

Not long ago did we hear of a certain second cycle school in the Greater Accra Region’s student has come in contact with the world most fearful and deadly disease called coronavirus, which has killed tens of thousands in the world right now and its vaccine is yet to be found.

The school is no other school than, Accra Girls Senior High School also known as Agiss for short. Accra Girls or Agiss is an all-female second-cycle institution in Accra, in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana, and operates as a nondenominational day and boarding school. The school was established, September 30, 1960, in the Ayawaso East Municipality, in a popular town called Nima a suburb of Accra.

Due to this issue, a journalist took upon himself, to visit Action Progressive Institute or Action Secondary Technical School, which is educational institution for secondary and technical education and is located in Madina Estate in the Greater Accra Region of Southeastern Ghana. The school was also established in the year 2000 in the La Nkwantanang Madina Municipal District.

In an exclusive interview with Mr.Jerry Agyapong (The Head Master) and Madam Harriet Jackson (Assistant Head Mistress) this is what they had to say, respectively. I wasn’t happy to hear what happened to the said student in Accra Girls S.H.S. but I can say, that has make us to be more vigilant on our students here despite all the measures put in place on our campus.

He also said he is not that happy for the protest of parent against the hierarchy of the Accra Girls S.H.S, because as one student has been affected, the rest of the students are suppose to be tested and see if no other students has been affected too, then we can see the way forward. In conclusion, he said if the government of Ghana should cancel this year’s West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE), though it will be a big blow for them as heads of the various school, but he think it will be the right call from the government of Ghana, should anything like that comes up.

    PANDEMIC ISSUES

Madam Harriet Jackson (Assistant Head Mistress) also said the Parents should exercise patience though is quite alarming to hear your ward in school has been affected by this deadly disease. You might not have it easy though, but all that i can say for now is that parents should please exercise patience. She ended her views with a word of advice saying; all the student’s body in all the second cycle schools across the country should observe all the protocols very well. That is, wearing of the nose mask, washing of hands regularly under running water with liquid soap and all other protocols should be observer as such.

NPP Will Retain Power with a Wider Margin – NPP Chairman To NDC

The 1st Vice Chairman for the New Patriotic Party in the Asokwa Constituency in the Ashanti Region has predicted that Elections 2020 will go in favour of the New Patriotic Party and therefore the opposition NDC should stop wasting time and resources on Campaigning for the upcoming elections.

According to the Vice-Chair, Ghanaians under NPP Government led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo have experienced good policies and transformations which have started yielding good results. On this note, most Ghanaians will never bring back a party that doesn’t think about the plight and development of its citizens but rather come to mess with the economy we have strongly built.

He said the flagship policies of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo led administration, such as Free Senior High School Policy, Planting for Food and Jobs, Planting for Food and Export, Nation Builders Corp (Nabco) which has so far engaged about 100,000 unemployed graduates, restoration of Teachers and Nursing trainees allowance among others have impacted almost every household in Ghana.
