NPP Manifesto: The fulfilled and unfulfilled sports promises of 2016

The New Patriotic Party on Saturday launched its manifesto for the 2020 elections.

The manifesto detailed the government’s plans for all sectors of the economy and sports was no exclusion.

In sports, the government set aside four things it intends to achieve should it be given the nod to lead Ghana for the next four years.

If elected, the party says it will build four Youth Resource Centres in six new regions and also construct a National Olympic Stadium as well as introduce Zongo Youth Football Talent Hunt.

    2016 promises

Unlike 2020 where the party made only four promises, the NPP earmarked nine key assurances to Ghanaians.

The party promised to enact the Sports Bill which was started by the Kufuor government.

In the 2020 manifesto, despite providing updates on some promises made for the sector, the NPP was silent on this.

It is, however, worth noting that the Sports Bill was enacted by the Mahama-led administration.

Develop in partnership with the private sector, Youth Development & Sports Centres in all Regions. Each centre will house a fully-equipped library, ICT hub, social hall, multipurpose pitches and courts.

The NPP followed through with its promises and began the construction of youth resource centres across the then ten administrative regions of the country.

The projects were due to finish in nine months, however, two years on, not a single one is ready for use.

The party wrote in its manifesto that works are still on going,

Complete the construction of the University of Ghana stadium started by the Kufuor-led NPP government

Not complete. Like the ten regional youth centres, the University of Ghana Stadium is still under construction though remarkable progress has been made.

Pursue the vision of providing modern multi-sport stadia for the regions currently without one, namely Brong Ahafo, Eastern, Upper East, Upper West and Volta

None of the above named regions has a stadium though they are all beneficiaries of the ten youth resource centres.

No multi-sports stadium has been built in any of them.

It was conspicuously missing in the listed updated projects in the 2020 manifesto

Establish three sports colleges in collaboration with the private sector

Not done. Not a single sports college has been established in any region. In fact, the only Sports College in Winneba which they promised to renovate has not witnessed the progress.

Develop a Youth in Sports module to support young sportsmen and women and to create job opportunities for them

The party claims to have achieved this but it is difficult to point to any project. The only initiative that comes to mind is the YEA program for the various sporting disciplines but that module was designed as a coronavirus support package and no one in 2016 anticipated the coronavirus pandemic.

Invest in a special Women-In-Sports programme to help unearth and support female athletes and sports talents across the country, and award scholarships to promising young athletes so they can develop in the best of environments

Again, in the 2020 manifesto this project was marked as ‘done’ though it is difficult to assess its impact.

GhanaWeb will be speaking to officials of government to evaluate the impact of these promises.

Election 2020: NPP to adopt ‘door-to-door’ campaign style – Nana B

The National Youth Organizer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye aka Nana B says the party is set to use strategic and innovative ways to reach out to electorates ahead of the December 7 general elections.

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, there will be no campaign rallies, hence the need to re-strategize.

  • Transport consultant condemns Mahama’s promise to legalise Okada

Transport consultant condemns Mahama’s promise to legalise Okada

A road safety expert and transport consultant has said a proposal to legalise the use of motorbikes for use as commercial means of transport (Okada) in the country is a bad one.

Cecil Gabrah believes the promise to legalise and regularise the activity is a political gimmick.

His comments come on the back of a promise by the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, to regulate and legalise Okada if elected as President on December 7, 2020.

Speaking to Joy News, Mr Gabrah said “politicians must not take advantage of their inability to create jobs for the youth and use Okada as bait for votes. That is so wrong in politics and they must stop it.”

According to him, the risk involved in regularising Okada in Ghana is too high.

“In Accra alone we have a lot of very fatal cases. Speak to Korle Bu Teaching and 37 Military Hospital and they will give you the daily statistics of fatalities,” he said.

Proponents of the regularisation and legalisation of Okada say it will create jobs, however, Cecil Gabrah disagrees.

“If you create jobs and people are going to die what are you talking about?” he said.

Meanwhile, the Bureau of Public Safety has said a sure way to prevent the associated road accidents with the use of motorbikes as commercial means of transport (Okada) is to move it away from sprawling city centres.

Executive Director of the public safety advocate, Nana Yaw Akwada, told GhanaWeb on Tuesday, August 25, 2020 that reports on Okada-related accidents show that majority of them happen in the busy urban areas.

According to Nana Yaw Akwada, Mr Mahama “must tell us when you say regulating are you going to move them from the city centres? Which is what we at the Bureau prefer; because more than 80% of the deaths associated with the okada cOme from the city centres. And from the commercial spaces, not on our highways or the fringes.”

Ghana’s laws make it illegal for a motorbike or a tricycle (aboboya) to be used as a commercial means of transport, however, for about eight years, their use and popularity have seen sharp rise.

The first day I become President that day I will not sleep in my house. I’m going to go to the police station and ask them to open the door I want to sleep in there because that is going to be the signal that if the President himself can sleep in the cell whoever is corrupt no favour no fear will sleep there,” he told Joy FM in an interview.

  • Akufo-Addo, Bawumia confused about proposed airport in Cape Coast – Ricketts-Hagan

Akufo-Addo, Bawumia confused about proposed airport in Cape Coast – Ricketts-Hagan

National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Cape Coast South constituency, Kweku Ricketts-Hagan has described the President Nana Akuffo-Addo and his Vice- President Dr Bawumia as an utterly confused people on the issue of whether Cape Coast should have an airport.

He said the promises, ‘the lies and the inconsistencies’ between the pair have finally come to a “dead end” as they have runout of anymore road to peddle their lies.

“It was astonishing to see the pair in Cape Coast over the weekend shamefully displaying to each other and to Ghanaians that they have lost the plot of their own lies and inconsistencies.

Speaking to reporters, on the NPP Manifesto launch in Cape Coast over the week end, Mr Ricketts-Hagan further said “What happened in Cape Coast over the weekend was shocking, the President had clearly said no, without using the word, to an airport in Cape Coast, looking unconvinced that Cape Coast needs an airport, then less than 24 hours the Vice- President Dr Bawumia, who was sharing the same stage at UCC, comes out to announce that the NPP government will construct an airport in Cape Coast, if they are given another 4 years.” It makes you wonder who is in charge of the country.

“It is incredible and beggars belief that the President of the Republic and his Vice- President, could stoop so low to deceive Cape Coasters, the people of the Central Region and ultimately Ghanaians that they are going to build an airport they clearly don’t agree on, they have not thought through, they have no plans for, no budget for (we will see what trick the come up with in November). But the Central Region will not fall for their empty promises and lies this time round.”

The President on Friday August 21, when being interviewed by ATL FM in Cape Coast during his tour of the Central Region, said the appeal by residents of Cape Coast to have an airport will be subjected to a critical assessment before a decision can be arrived. One could clearly tell from the interview that he was not in favour of an airport being built in Cape Coast, though he recognizes the tourism potential of Cape Coast in particular and Central Region in general.

The President further said “… the response of the government should not just be that the people say we need an airport, the response should be that the matter has been thoroughly examined and the need has been established. That is the process the Ministry of Aviation is going through.”

“We have to be able to decide for ourselves whether the need for the airport can be justified when you have Accra, and you have Kumasi, you have Takoradi, you have Tamale and whether on the coast with Accra’s presence there’s the need for an additional airport.” So this is a President who clearly is not interested in an airport in Cape Coast.

In less than 24 hours, the Vice-President, who was speaking at the manifesto launch at the University of Cape Coast on Saturday August 22, embarrassingly contradicted the President by saying that the government will construct an airport in Cape Coast, if the NPP government is given another four year mandate in the upcoming December elections.

Dr Bawumia said “We are going to build a new harbour and a new airport in Cape Coast. It is very critical that the Central Region gets its own airport.”

The NPP government is now desperately formulating policies and their manifesto on the road. They have clearly become “pay-as-you –go” government.

  • Murder of 64-yr-old Bio-Chemist: 3 Traditional priests caged again

Murder of 64-yr-old Bio-Chemist: 3 Traditional priests caged again

The Kaneshie District Court presided over by Her Worship Rosemond Dodua Agyri has adjourned the case in which three traditional priests have been held for the murder of a 64-year-old Bio-Chemist Edward Quartey Papafio to September 7, 2020.

This was after the prosecution led by Detective Inspector Lawrence Anani had told the court that investigations are still ongoing.

All three accused persons were present in court while the case was held in chambers.

The court, however, renewed their remand warrant into prison custody.

    Background

The traditional priests who allegedly caused the death of the 64-year-old Bio Chemist at Adeiso in the Eastern Region, are Christian Awoe Gamelie aka Power-One, 40, Famous Adukonu aka Scorpion, 37, and Yaw Azamate, 27.

They are being held on the charges of conspiracy to commit a crime to wit murder and murder. The three accused have had their pleas preserved when they appeared before the court presided over by Rosemond Dodua Agyiri.

On their first appearance in court, the prosecution led by Detective Inspector Anani, said for convenience sake, the Police would prefer that the accused were remanded into Prison custody.

The court agreed with prosecution’s prayer and remanded them into prison custody.

    Bench warrant

Meanwhile, a bench warrant issued for the arrest of Michael Ahiavinye and one Buzanga who are at large is still in force.

It was the case of the prosecution that the complainant is the Reverend Comfort Ruth Quartey Papafio, who resides at Takoradi in the Western Region. Gamelie, Adukonu and Azamete operate their business at Adu Kojo and Kwasi Nyarko, all suburbs of Mame Dede in the Eastern Region.

According to him, on January 17, this year, the complainant reported of her missing husband, Mr Quartey Papafio, from his residence at Kasoa on January 15, this year at about 0733 hours.

The Detective Inspector said on receipt of the complainant, the Police gathered intelligence that the deceased was last spotted at Gameli’s shrine located on the outskirts of Adu Kojo, which led to the arrest of Gameli and Adukonu on April 21, this year.

He told the court that, a search conducted at Gameli’s shrine revealed two pump action guns, one single barrel gun, eleven packets of cartridges and seven other pieces of the cartridges from his room and two shovels were found hidden at the back of his house.

The Prosecution said during interrogation, Gameli and Adukonu admitted shooting the deceased with the pump action gun on January 15, this year and buried the corpse at the Shrine.

He said on April 29, the two led the Police to Power-One herbal/Spiritual Centre where the Police identified the deceased’s grave in a make shift cemetery behind Gameli’s house, adding that the scene was secured and an exhumation order was obtained from the court for that purpose.

The prosecution said on April 30, this year, a Pathologist in the company of Senior Officers from the CID Headquarters, Personnel from the Crime Scene Management Team, Forensic Science Laboratory, Drone Operation and CID/ Headquarters Operational Team together with the two accused to exhume the deceased body.

He said when the grave was dug, the decomposed body of Mr Quartey Papafio was removed and it was discovered that his grave was among other graves in the accused’s cemetery, which was well fenced.

Prosecution said investigations disclosed that on December 29, Gameli, Adukonu and Azamete conspired to kill Mr Papafio, hence lured him with the assistance of one Buzanga, also a traditional priest at Kasoa, currently at large.

The prosecution said before the murder of the deceased, the accused intentionally, made a false statement to the deceased and succeeded in collecting ¢10,650 from him through mobile money under the pretext of conjuring ¢400,000 for him to establish his company.

He said Papafio was invited to the shrine on January 15, this year for purification and in the process, Adukonu shot him with Gameli’s gun.

Prosecution said the accused then drained quantity of Mr Papafio’s blood into a plastic gallon and hid same at the shrine while Gameli took possession of the deceased mobile phones and later buried the deceased with the assistance of Azamate and Michael who is also on the run.

The Prosecution said Gameli and Adukonu allegedly confessed to the Police that the blood in the gallon was a mixture of Papafio and another victim who was also buried among other bodies at the cemetery.

He said the gallon of blood and the body were deposited at the Police morgue for examination.

Mr Anani said the complainant later identified the two mobile phones of the deceased.

The prosecution said the Pathologist gave the cause of death of Mr Papafio as hemorrhagic shock, traumatic amputation and unnatural severe chest pain.

We need jobs not an airport – Cape Coast residents to govt

Residents in the Central Region, especially Cape Coast say they prefer the creation of jobs for the teeming unemployed youth in the area and not the building of an airport as promised by the Akufo-Addo goverment.

Speaking at the launch of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) 2020 Manifesto in Cape Coast on Saturday Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia promised that the Akufo-Addo government during its second term will build a harbour and an airport in the coastal town.

“For the people of Cape Coast, I have good news for you. We are building a new harbour in Cape Coast and a new airport in Cape Coast,” he said.

At the manifesto launch, Dr Bawumia noted that building an airport in Cape Coast was very critical in the support of what he described as one of the country’s major tourist and economic hubs.

“An airport makes a lot of sense in Cape Coast. It’s a real tourist hub and between Greater Accra, Kumasi and Cape Coast you have a triangle that really is a hub for economic activities,” he said.

The residents in an interview with Kasapa FM News Yaw Boagyan stated that building an airport in Cape Coast is a misplaced priority. Instead the need construction of factories to reduce the high unemployment rate in the area.

“There are a lot of people unemplyed in this area and we need work to do so we can feed ourselves and other dependants. For us, building an airport here is not necessary. We’ll be happy if more industries are built,” Ato Hayford said.

Another resident added: “Building an airport may be good but it should be distance future viosion. Of what importance will an airport be to the many people here who have no jobs and struggle to feed themselves,” Araba Hayford asked.

Some of the residents suspect that their chiefs must have made the request of building an airport in Cape Coast to the President, insisting that the project is not a priority.

Nigerian Comedian Descend On Ghanaian Media For Promoting Quarrels Instead Promoting Our Artistes

A Nigerian comedian by name, Pararan has laid out certain facts about Ghanaian media which is not helping our music.

There has always been the argument of why Nigerian music and artistes do so well than Ghanaian artistes and music. In these conversations, mostly people put the blame on the numbers but according to the comedian this is not true because Jamaica don’t have numbers but have their songs every where.

According to Pararan, he has been monitoring the news coming in from Ghana and he has realized they are mostly about quarrels, and mentioning Papa No and Mzbel.

He said when artistes come for interviews, presenters turn to ask them questions that will make them say negative things so they post on social media which is not helping.

He went ahead to give examples on how Nigerians are currently promoting the albums of their artistes, like Burna Boy, Fire Boy and others saying the quarrels being promoted is too much and it should be reduced and used to promote our artistes instead.
