Photo: Meet the 60-year-old JHS woman writing BECE

Y’all know that COVID-19 forced Ghana’s president to shut down schools, but all is set and now final year students of Junior High Schools have started their Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

The examination which will last for a week kick-started on Monday, September 14 with the English paper.

At the Agona Odoben Presby Junior High School, the oldest BECE candidate of this badge sat for the exams. She is no other than 60-year-old Elizabeth Yamoah.

This is somehow ridiculous, but let’s give her the benefit of the doubt and wish her well in her new endeavours.

‘Women Are The Properties Of Men, They Shouldn’t Be Given Freedom After Marriage’ – Man Sparks Outrage Online

A Kenyan on-air personality, Captain Kale has sparked outrage online after he said women are the properties of men and therefore should not be given any form of freedom at all right after marriage.

Captain disclosed this while reacting to a topic in which radio host, Maina Kagena asked women about the definition of freedom in marriage. “Ladies, when you tell your husband you want freedom in your marriage/relationship, what do you mean” the theme under discussion pointed out.

While responding, Captain Kale said giving freedom to women is just like handing a fully loaded gun to your enemy. “When I married her, I paid for her, hence me owning her. She should do as I say. Even her going to say hi to her parents needs me to think about it,” he tweeted.

Women are irresponsible human beings and they need to be guided every time. They can’t function without someone being hard on them. Giving women freedom is like giving a gun full of bullets to your enemy.

How Aseidu Nketia was given a hefty Slap

General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Aseidu has recounted some difficulties he encountered as a student.

He may be popularly known as General Mosquito but he has revealed another powerful nickname that earned him a slap back in the days.

Mr Nketia has disclosed he was a brilliant Mathematics student and that got him the name Archimedes, the name of a Greek Mathematician.

“I was called Archimedes because I was good in mathematics but I suffered for it,” he said in an interview on Joy FM’s Personality Profile.

Being a brilliant and confident student, he always stood up to challenge his teachers in class, an action most teachers were not pleased with.

“It was one time in class five when a mathematics teacher marked me down in an exam but I was so sure the answer was correct and decided to rework the solution but I did not go to the teacher to challenge him,” he recounted.

“I took my own red pen and corrected the mark, an act my mates made noise about and that angered the teacher. He came to the class, removed his wrist watch and gave me a dirty slap which landed me on the floor,” he added amid laughter.

However, General Mosquito pointed out that did not deter him from challenging the status quo when not convinced.

One person has died while two others, including a police officer, have been wounded following a daylight robbery attack on the Manso–Kumasi road in the Ashanti Region.

The deceased has only been identified as Attakorah, 35, who worked as a cashier with a bank; though the police did not provide the name of the financial institution.

He was declared dead at the scene on Friday, September 11, 2020, according to a police communication available to Dailymailgh.com.

    Attack

The four-member team were on board a Toyota Hilux bullion van with registration number GE 3978 – 20 driven by one Antwi Boasiako of Agate Mabot, a private security firm on an escort from Manso-Asaman to various banks in Kumasi.

  • Prof. Gyampo had Just Told Akuffo Addo and the NPP the Hard Truth

Prof. Gyampo had Just Told Akuffo Addo and the NPP the Hard Truth

An Associate Professor of political science, who is also the director of the Center for European Studies of the University of Ghana, Prof. Ransford Gyamfo has told the ruling New Patriotic Party and the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, the hard truth about the 2020 elections.

Speaking on United Television’s Programme the Critical Issues, Professor Ransford Gyampo told Host, Afia Pokuaa that, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has a major challenge going into the 2020 general elections.

He indicates that, the NPP has a lot of achievements they can showcase to the people of Ghana, but they have a communication deficit.

He indicates that, communicators of the NPP, who are supposed to trumpet the achievements have rather resorted to propaganda and are discussing issues which are not relevant to the ordinary voter.

He however disclosed that, it is only the Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, who is communicating the gains of the NPP properly to Ghanaians and he is really making impact.

“I have to tell NPP the truth, if they really are serious for business in this election year, then they should strengthen their communication front. Their only problem is communication. Telling people what they have done is a major issue. They speak only about propaganda, and propaganda is not relevant to the voter. They should   rethink about how they communicate to Ghanaians. So far, it is only Dr. Bawumia who has proven to be the best when it comes to communication.

He speaks about fact and figures and it is always interesting listening to him. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah was doing well initially but now, he is also gone into propaganda. Being able to articulate what they have done is lacking”. Professor Ransford Gyampo told Afia Pokua during the discussion.

  • Construction of the National Cathedral to start in October – Gov’t announces

Construction of the National Cathedral to start in October – Gov’t announces

The commencement of the construction of the debatable National Cathedral which was earlier scheduled for April will begin in October as promised by President Akufo-Addo.

This is according to a Citi News interview with the Secretary of the Board of Trustees for the project, Victor Kusi Boateng.

According to Mr Kusi Boateng, the new date will see the completion of the cathedral.

“It had to be delayed because there were a few complications here and there with regard to people that were going to work on the project. Actual construction will begin in October [2020] if not for the COVID-19. By the grace of God the main contractor of the project is almost approved and so by the first or second week of October construction will start,” he added.

President Akufo-Addo’s priorities have been questioned ever since he decided to build a National Cathedral. A large section of the citizenry believe amongst all the problems facing Ghana, a National Cathedral is not one of the solutions.

However, the president has said the construction of the National Cathedral is in fulfilment of a personal promise he made to God before the 2016 general elections.

The monument is expected to be put up within the next five years and will have a 5,000 seating capacity with chapels, a baptistery, a music school, an art gallery and a Bible museum.

  • High Court Drags Kennedy Agyapong to Court

High Court Drags Kennedy Agyapong to Court

High Court Judge, Sulemana Issifu has dragged Member of Parliament(MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong before the Chief Justice for threatening to deal with him (the Judge) for issuing an interlocutory injunction against him in land dispute case.

According to the Judge, it’s imperative that the lawmaker be made to face the law because “his outburst puts the sitting judge’s life in harm’s way because revulsion towards the judge may have occasioned amongst his teeming supporters”.

He further indicted that “if this matter is not addressed, I am afraid it may spur on political actors to use their influence to cower the judiciary into submission and insulate politicians from the law. This would engender hate and weaken the standing of the judiciary and cast it as a ‘white elephant’ in the eyes of many ordinary Ghanaians. Further, it would mean that ordinary people cannot seek justice from the courts against persons of Mr Agyepong’s stature and breed a culture of lawlessness amongst the populace”.

To him, “Mr Agyepong would have been fully aware of the laid down legal remedies available to him, as same may have been communicated to him by his counsel, but opted to use his influence to sway the public to his direction and to ingrain in the minds of his teeming supporters, his authority over the courts. It is my respectful view, and I hold same to be true per the contents of the video, that, he set out to desecrate the courts in a contemptuously bizarre fashion”.

He called on the Chief Justice to proffer “a strong action against Mr Agyepong is necessary to establish the independence and authority of the courts and to deter persons in future from acting in an analogous manner. Such an action will instill in the people, confidence in – and the requisite support for – the judiciary”.

Kennedy Agyapong is on record to have said that “You are a stupid judge. I will face you”.

“I am not Anas to take bribe from you,” he added in local language Twi.

He stressed: “I will deal with you”.

THE CHIEF JUSTICE, REPUBLIC OF GHANA
    ACCRA

    7TH SEPTEMBER 2020

Dear Your Lordship, Justice Anim Yeboah,

PETITION: TAKE ACTION AGAINST KENNEDY AGYEPONG, HONOURABLE MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT, ASSIN CENTRAL FOR HIS THREATS AGAINST THE JUDICIARY

Your Lordship, please have my highest regard and I hope this petition finds you well.
I wish to draw your attention to two issues that are of supreme national interest and may have grave consequences for our dear Republic if not expeditiously addressed. I do so, on account of the constitutional imperative that obliges all citizens to at all times safeguard the constitution of Ghana and by extension, the creatures of the constitution including the judiciary, which you are head of. As the head of this important state institution, it is my contention, that, due to the severity of the issues at hand, it should be brought to your attention for action. My trepidation is premised on the unfortunate historical antecedent, which your good self may be much familiar with than me, where judges were murdered in cold blood while exercising their duties. Thereafter, other incidences including the storming and ransacking of Kumasi High Court by thugs, ‘Montie 3’, etc have occurred and I offer to assist to stop this monumental impunity against the courts.

    First issue
I have seen a video and authenticated same to be original, in which, the honourable member of parliament for Assin Central, Mr Kennedy Agyepong, amidst unsavoury comments (which out of respect for Your Lordship, I am unable to repeat but are contained in the attached video and transcripts) about a sitting judge and the entire judiciary, threatens to deal ruthlessly with a judge whom, Mr Agyepong claims, had issued an interlocutory injunction against him in land dispute case (Emmanuel Mompi, Iris Mompi, Mr Eric Afotey Odai versus Hon. Knennedy Ohene Agyapong with case reference number LD/1028/20). The unfortunate and highly dangerous actions of Mr Agyepong happened on his Net 2 TV while appearing on a show dubbed “The Seat” hosted by one, Kweku Annan. I have attached a copy of the video and transcripts of his comments to this petition for your perusal.

First, his outburst puts the sitting judge’s life in harm’s way because revulsion towards the judge may have occasioned amongst the teeming supporters of Mr Agyepong. I therefore beforehand, request you respectfully, to take immediate steps to secure the life of the judge. Your Lordship, if this matter is not addressed, I am afraid it may spur on political actors to use their influence to cower the judiciary into submission and insulate politicians from the law. This would engender hate and weaken the standing of the judiciary and cast it as a ‘white elephant’ in the eyes of many ordinary Ghanaians. Further, it would mean that ordinary people cannot seek justice from the courts against persons of Mr Agyepong’s stature and breed a culture of lawlessness amongst the populace.

An important point for your attention, Your Lordship, is that, looking at Mr Agyepong’s standing in our society as a legislator and an influential political actors, he ought to have known available remedies to him should he feel dissatisfied by a court’s ruling. Indeed I hold that, Mr Agyepong would have been fully aware of the laid down legal remedies available to him, as same may have been communicated to him by his counsel, but opted to use his influence to sway the public to his direction and to ingrain in the minds of his teeming supporters, his authority over the courts. It is my respectful view, and I hold same to be true per the contents of the video, that, he set out to desecrate the courts in a contemptuously bizarre fashion.

I further hold, Your Lordship, that, Mr Agyepong’s conduct is graver in scope and impact than the infamous ‘Montie 3’. This is because of the influence he wields and the coverage of the channel on which he made these dangerous comments compared to the ‘Montie 3’ in these respects. A strong action against Mr Agyepong is necessary to establish the independence and authority of the courts and to deter persons in the future from acting in an analogous manner. Such action will instill in the people, confidence in – and the requisite support for – the judiciary .

    Second issue
Your Lordship, in another video of Mr Agyepong which was shot on the same “The Seat” show, he, together with the host, created an impression and indeed communicated succinctly to the public that, you, Justice Annin Yeboah, the Chief Justice of the Republic, had restored the ‘licenses’ and ‘certificates’ of all judges who were busted in the judicial scandal produced by, investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
Respectfully, I seek the following information as part of my right to information under the constitution and RTI Act of parliament, and request same to be communicated to me in writing –

    1. 1. Is it true that justices who were busted and dismissed have been reinstated, and their ‘certificates/licenses’ restored if at all those licenses were revoked?
    2. 2. If so, when did this happen and what processes were used for the restoration/reinstatement?
    3. 3. If false, why has not your respected office issued any statement debunking these serious allegations or disinformation so to speak? I have attached a copy of the said video and transcripts for your perusal.
Please, be rest assured, that, though I am currently not in the Ghanaian jurisdiction, should your office require of me to assist in unpacking the issues raised herein, I shall avail myself to assist if given enough notice time. Kindly use the correspondence provided in the address section in case of reply.

Accept my best wishes. Thank you.

    Yours sincerely,
    Sulemana Issifu
