Akuffo Addo begins distribution of 10,000 beds to public health facilities

A total of 10,000 hospital beds are to be distributed to all public health facilities across the country beginning this week under the Infrastructure for Poverty Eradication Programme (IPEP).

This according to President Akufo-Addo is aimed at reducing the “no bed syndrome” in the country’s public health space.

Speaking at a ceremony in Accra to officially begin the distribution exercise, President Akuffo Addo says the government has in the last three years implemented programmes and policies aimed at improving the health delivery system of the country.

Nana Akufo-Addo said it is always disconcerting to see patients being treated in wheelchairs, in plastic chairs, and even on the floors because of the unavailability of beds.

“Government’s determination to see an end to this no-bed syndrome has resulted in the decision to procure these hospital beds and their associated accessories for distribution across the country, to augment the existing numbers in the country,” the President said.

To this end, he stated that “in total, 1,500 pieces of critical care beds with overhead tables; two thousand 2,000 pieces of standard hospital beds with bedside lockers; 4,000 pieces health centre beds with bedside lockers; 1,000 pieces of children’s cot; and 1,500 pieces of delivery beds have been purchased”.

At the ceremony held at Burma Camp, where the beds are being housed, President Akufo-Addo stated that the beds, which are to be distributed to all 275 constituencies, are adjustable for better positioning of the patient’s head and feet.

He told the gathering that these beds will allow for better movement of patients, as well as a periodic change to the pressure points on the body, thereby, improving the patient’s blood circulation whilst she/he is in bed, adding that “they maximise comfort for patients who will use them for extended periods of time, and their customisable features will make it easy to adjust specific parts of the bed.”

Whilst urging users and hospital staff to take good care of these beds, which have come at significant cost to the taxpayer, President Akufo-Addo stressed that “with four (4) more years for Nana and the NPP, we will do more for you, because we are motivated by a vision of ensuring that the basic infrastructure in education, health and social services is equitably distributed throughout our nation, to provide relief and encouragement to all sectors of our society. That is how we build a united Ghana”.

“We won’t legalise Okada Business”- Bawumia

The Vice President of the Republic Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has now clarified that the ruling government won’t legalize Okada operations. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) was in a panic mode moments after their main political rivals, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) promised to legalize Okada business as captured in their manifesto.

As a result, it came to light that the NPP was doing everything possible to legalize the operations of the motorcyclists to obviously score cheap political points.

However, Bawumia insists the movie is a risky one considering the nature of their work hence there will be no legalization whatsoever. He assured the riders of a better alternative of empowering them to purchase brand new cars assembled in the country so they engage in a safer business.

Dr. Bawumia said this on Thursday in Accra which saw VW and BlackIvy signed an MoU to embark on the production of affordable homes and affordable cars for the Ghanaian people.

If NPP Wins, I will Support my Husband in transformation- Empress Gifty Adorye Promises

Award winning Gospel musician, Empress Gifty Adorye says she is so far satisfied with government’s work for the Creative Arts industry however, there’s still room for more work to be done.

There have been mixed reactions among showbiz personalities especially after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) launched their 2020 manifesto a couple of weeks ago.

While some have chastised government for not fulfilling most of the promises made to the Arts industry in their 2016 manifesto, some have also commended them for a good job done.

One of such people is gospel singer Empress Gifty who in an interview with Hitz FM’s Noella Kharyne Yalley said save for a few qualms, she was generally satisfied with the NPP administration’s contributions to the Creative Arts industry.

“For me I will say yes, I’m satisfied but there’s more room for improvement. Three years has passed and what I would advise the government to do is to focus on the creative arts. We’re losing a lot.

“We’re losing our integrity, the love, the passion because, you put in so much money, but you don’t get it back. Now people don’t buy CD’s, streaming seems to be the ‘ish’ now, so we need a structure or system that will work for us, our royalties, and certain things that can push us”

She also prayed for the President to take another “look at our industry again, and see what he can do to support us. I think he promised the industry a whole lot of things and I’m really praying that with the few months left to elections, he can do something”.

Early last year, Empress Gifty married Hopeson Adorye, the Deputy Director for National Security under the NPP.

When asked what she will do in her capacity as the wife of a government official to influence government to help the Arts, she revealed that she plans to “use” her husband who is currently contesting as a parliamentary candidate in the Kpong Katamanso constituency as a means to bring the needed change in the industry.

“Now my husband is an NPP parliamentary candidate for Kpong Katamanso, and I’m hoping and praying that the people will give the mandate to my husband.

“I don’t want to promise, but if my husband wins I’m going to use him to bring a little change. And I’ll be a bit bias towards my gospel people. We’re suffering, it’s very hard to go to the studio, bring out an album and promote it.”

PPP Will Abolish BECE, Says Brigette Dzogbenuku- Asaase Radio

The 2020 presidential candidate of the Progressive Peoples Party (PPP), Brigitte Dzogbenuku, has promised to abolish the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) when voted to power.

According to her, the PPP government will ensure that students are educated from Creche to Senior High School(SHS) without a break for exams.

In an exclusive interview with Citi News, Madam Dzogbenuku said examination should not be the determining factor for the academic success of a student in Ghana.

“We will abolish BECE because every child must be educated at least to the SHS level…If everybody is educated to the SHS level and at least can read and write, Ghana will have a different kind of society where people are more informed and are more empowered. Examinations are not the only way to check people.”

“There can be regular assessment of the school and of the systems of how the teachers are performing and then the exam becomes the ultimate. We can’t use only exams to test kids because that is not the best test of a school or an education system.”

She stressed o the fact that her government would ensure that the  Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (FCUBE) is implemented to increase access.

“We will implement Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education to its fullest because the enforcers of that policy haven’t done their work well and that is why we see students loitering around without doing anything. We must also hold parents accountable so we can have the proper checks and balances in the schools to know which student is absent and why such a student is not in school.”

“First of all the government sectors must work. The education sector must also work and work efficiently to have an inspectorate board to make sure students who ought to be in school are in school and at the right time.”

Madama Brigitte Dzogbenuku was chosen as the flagbearer of the PP after their founder Dr. Papa Kwesi Ndoum declined to lead the party into this year’s election.
