Japanese football star Keisuke Honda on Saturday
marketed himself to Manchester United in an unusual and apparently desperate
Twitter plea, as he hunts for a new club.
According to him, Man Utd should give me an offer. I don’t need money but I need to play with great team and a great teammate.
Honda is trying to find a new club in Europe
after leaving Australia’s Melbourne Victory in May.
He is aiming to continue playing international
football after announcing his intention to compete at Tokyo 2020 Olympics as an
overage player.
Honda shot to fame at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa when his goals helped Japan reach the last 16. He has 37 goals in 98 appearances for his country and was the first Japanese player to score at three World Cups – 2010, 2014 and 2018.
Instantly recognizable with his spiky, bleached blond hair, he played for Italian giants AC Milan from 2014 to 2017, after earlier stints for VVV-Venlo in Holland and Russian side CSKA Moscow.
Frank Lampard insists Chelsea are on course to
finish in the Premier League’s top four despite their spluttering start to his
reign.
Lampard’s side is languishing in 11th, 10 points off early leaders Liverpool, after winning just twice in their first six league matches.
However, they are just three points adrift of
fourth-placed Arsenal and level on points with traditional top-six rivals
Manchester United and Tottenham.
No, of course not,” Lampard told reporters on Friday that when asked if he was concerned about Chelsea’s prospects of qualifying for the Champions League.
Look at the other teams around us. Arsenal, Man United. We understand we’re in and among it. Having seen the young players, I’m as confident as I was before. We want to be competitive and get into the top four.”
Former striker El Hadji Diouf has stimulated that, Premier League leaders Liverpool are no strangers to cracking under pressure, having “bottled it” last season to finish second.
Liverpool scythed down rivals last season for a
tight battle with Manchester City before losing the title to Pep Guardiola’s
side by a solitary point.
Diouf said he doesn’t see them doing as well as they did last season,” Diouf, who scored six goals in 80 appearances for the Merseyside club between 2002-05, told Dfm sports.
They had the chance to win the league title; they had it in their hands and then let it slip. They were seven points ahead around Christmas – how City got it, in the end, beats my mind.
Liverpool, who captured a sixth European Cup in
June, lost only one game in the Premier League last season – against City – and
Diouf was baffled by how Jurgen Klopp’s team had not translated their dominance
into a trophy.
If you have only one defeat in a whole season, surely you can’t say that you didn’t win the league,” the former Senegal international added.
Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof has
said he is not bothered about the criticism from his former manager Jose
Mourinho in the aftermath of his side’s 2-0 defeat to West Ham United.
Mourinho, who signed Lindelof from Portuguese
side Benfica during his tenure as coach from 2016 to 2018, said the Swedish
international was “very good” in some aspects of the game but could
be “turn on the heat ” by forwards due to weakness in air-minded
shootouts.
For me it has never been a problem or anything to me, I’m a very easy guy,” Lindelof told DFM sports. Even when I play good there is someone assessing me for something. It’s part of the job, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
The 25-year-old, who recently signed a new
contract that will keep him at United until at least June 2024, praised new
defensive partner Harry Maguire’s leadership.
He said I’m just trying to do my thing and I don’t focus on those things. I didn’t even notice, or know about it before you told me. That’s how I live my life and focus on my things.”
Sergio Romero saved Manchester United from an embarrassing
exit in the EFL Cup as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side needed penalties to knock
out third-tier Rochdale after a 1-1 draw.
Mason Greenwood put United in front in the second half on
Wednesday, the teenager scoring for the second week in a row after netting the
winner against Astana in the Europa League.
But the League One side stunned Old Trafford with an equalizer scored by 16-year-old Luke Matheson, who was set up by United academy product Ollie Rathbone.
That sent the game to penalties and when Romero kept out
Jimmy Keohane’s effort, Daniel James was able to convert United’s last kick and
complete a 5-3 shoot-out victory.
Barcelona’s Lionel Messi won the best men’s player at the
Best Fifa Football Awards in Milan as Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo and
Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk missed out on the top prize.
It is the sixth time Messi has been voted the best player in
the world.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp won the men’s coach of the
year. Klopp was nominated for the award along with two other Premier League
bosses – Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola and Tottenham’s Mauricio Pochettino.
Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson
was also a winner as he took the best goalkeeper prize ahead of Manchester
City’s Ederson and Barcelona’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa won the fair play award after he ordered his team to allow Aston Villa to score an uncontested equalizer during their 1-1 draw in their Championship match in April.
Eighteen-year-old Daniel Zsori won the Puskas award for the
best goal with his spectacular 93rd-minute overhead kick for Debrecen against
Ferencvaros, just after he came on as a substitute for his Hungarian league
debut in February.
The former manager says the current United side is no better than they were a year ago, but he isn’t reveling in their struggles after being sacked
Jose Mourinho admits he deserved to be sacked as Manchester
United manager – but he isn’t enjoying watching them struggle under Ole Gunnar
Solskjaer.
United was deservedly beaten 2-0 at West Ham on Sunday, a result which saw them drop down to eighth in the Premier League table.
The club was in sixth when Mourinho was sacked midway through last season, with fans disgruntled at what they saw as an overly defensive style of football.
I’m not the right person to answer it,” Mourinho said when
asked about United’s problems.
They are far behind. It’s difficult for me to answer. I was
there for two seasons where I could feel lots of positive things and I could
feel the direction to go in, then obviously the third season was not good
enough.
“I was sacked, I probably deserved to be sacked because I was responsible as the manager, but the sad reality is that they are worse than before. And for me, that is a sad thing. Maybe people think I’m enjoying the situation but I’m not enjoying it at all.”

He was featured in a 2017 BBC documentary titled Speechless where he revealed
his struggles with speech.
Black Stars Technical Coordinator and former Captain Stephen Appiah have confirmed his interest to ultimately become President of the Ghana Football Association.
He believes he has gathered valuable knowledge along with his career and possesses qualities that will benefit the Ghanaian game.
The former Juventus midfielder, strongly hinted that there
will come a period in the near future where the game of football in Ghana will
be heavily governed by former players.
His comments come at a time when the Normalisation Committee of the Ghana Football Association has set October 25th, 2019 as the day when a new President will be elected.
“The criteria to be part of this Association requires
you to associate yourself with a club and that is what we are not doing.
Some of us are having meetings and we are thinking about a
lot of things.
When you go to Europe football is run by footballers.
We are still learning and watching whatever is going on so
when we come we don’t make the same mistakes.
As I said never say never one day it will happen” he
concluded with a coy smile”.
The 2019 FA Presidency, however, is expected to be keenly contested with former GFA Vice Presidents Fred Pappoe and George Afriyie officially confirming their bid to run.

Neymar shrugged off a hostile reception as he marked his
return to action for Paris Saint-Germain with a stunning injury-time winner on
Saturday, and then insisted it was time to move on from the saga of his aborted
return to Barcelona.
The world’s most expensive player was booed and insulted by
sections of the PSG support in the Ligue 1 match against Strasbourg at the Parc
des Princes.
That seemed set to be the only story of the afternoon until the
second minute of added time when, with the game still goalless, the Brazilian
met Abdou Diallo’s cross with an acrobatic effort that sent the ball arcing
back over his own head and in off the post, sealing a 1-0 win.
It was a remarkable goal and a reminder of why PSG paid a
world record 222 million euros ($264 million at the time) to sign Neymar in
2017. It also leaves them two points clear of Rennes at the top of Ligue 1.
“I made it clear that I have nothing against the fans,
nothing against Paris Saint-Germain as a club. Everyone knows I wanted to
leave. I am not going to get into the details of what happened,” he said
after the game.
“It is time to turn the page. Today I am a Paris
Saint-Germain player and I am going to give everything on the field.
Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka conceded he and his
team-mates were ‘scared’ in the second half of their Premier League clash with
Watford on Sunday, allowing the Hornets to battle back for a 2-2 draw.
The Gunners took a two-goal lead in the first half thanks to a brace from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the second a superb team goal, with the Gabon international capping off a 20-pass move.
Two defensive errors in the second period led to Watford
pulling level and eventually gaining a share of the spoils.
Xhaka was honest about his team’s performance after the match, saying the Gunners were disappointed and had been punished for being ‘scared’.
“We are very disappointed, we had a good first half and
then we came out and played so bad in the second half,” he said to BBC Sport.
“We paid for that.
“We knew they had nothing to lose and they would come
for us but we didn’t show our game, we were too scared, nobody wanted the ball.
