  • Lack of mental health help: ‘I felt nobody cares’.

Lack of mental health help: ‘I felt nobody cares’.

The number of under-18s getting NHS help for mental health issues in England nearly halved in the first two months of lockdown.

Young people who weren’t able to get support say they felt like they “didn’t really matter”.

Lucy, who’s 17, says she she didn’t know where to go for help.

The number of people in England referred to Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) dropped 47% in April and May, compared with last year.

CAMHS is the name for NHS mental health support for people until they are 18.

Replies to Freedom of Information (FOI) requests from 40 NHS Trusts in England showed 22,735 patients were referred, compared to 42,887 patients in the same two months last year.

Another 10 Trusts weren’t able to answer within the deadline.

The exclusive data was obtained by Radio 1 Newsbeat.

Charities worry a drop like this could happen again if we see a second spike and further lockdowns around the UK.
Lucy, who’s from Manchester, had gone to her school for counselling before – but when she wanted help in lockdown, her school was closed.

She didn’t feel she could go to her GP either.

“There were no face-to-face appointments which was a bit problematic, because it’s really hard to talk about mental health online.”

Lucy ended up going for treatment privately after lockdown – she says she’s lucky that her mum had private health insurance to help pay for it.

“Everything goes so much quicker when you go privately, but that’s a privilege most young people don’t have,” she says.

“I knew I probably wasn’t going to be able to get any help from CAMHS.”

The drop in referrals in lockdown “is likely to be because of school closures and the increased difficulties of going to your GP,” says Emma Thomas, chief executive at mental health charity YoungMinds.
She adds it might have also been because of “some young people choosing not to look for help at a time when the NHS was under so much pressure.”

But she believes many under-18s needed mental health support more than usual at that time, because of fears about the virus, social isolation, the loss of routine and in some cases, losing someone they cared about.

“The combination of worsening mental health and reduced support could create a surge in demand over the coming months,” she warns.

‘You feel like you should just give up’
After someone is referred to CAMHS, the service decides if they will be given treatment.

As you’d expect from the drop in referrals, the FOI data also showed 40% fewer patients were accepted for help in April and May this year compared to in 2019.

Olivia is 16 and was referred to CAMHS by her GP in March.

She says the worry and stress of her GCSEs, the divorce of her parents, and the social isolation in lockdown made her feel completely alone.

But although she was referred, she was then rejected for treatment twice in lockdown.

She says it made her feel like she “didn’t really matter” and “making a big deal out of nothing.”

“You feel like you should just give up because nobody really cares.”
Olivia thinks pressure on health services in the pandemic played a part in the rejections, as she had been treated with CAMHS previously and was told she could come back to the service in future.

“Accessing the service was difficult pre-Covid, but it’s certainly much, much harder since Covid hit,” she says.

“It was quite apparent, or my instinct said, the reason it was more difficult was because of Covid.

“It certainly impacted on our situation and made it a much more lengthy process.”

It was only after a third referral – and lockdown restrictions lifted – that Olivia got treatment in August.

  • Coronavirus: French police raid ministers’ homes in pandemic inquiry.

Coronavirus: French police raid ministers’ homes in pandemic inquiry.

French police have raided the homes of senior government and health officials as part of an investigation into their handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

Health Minister Olivier Véran and the director of the national health agency, Jérôme Salomon, are among those whose properties were searched on Thursday.

It comes after a court launched an inquiry earlier this year into the government’s handling of the pandemic.

It has faced criticism over shortages of equipment and slow response times.

Prime Minister Jean Castex is also under investigation, French media report, as is his predecessor Edouard Philippe and Mr Véran’s predecessor Agnès Buzyn.

The court that launched the investigation in July hears cases of alleged wrongdoing by ministers and other government officials in the course of their duties.

The move comes shortly after President Emmanuel Macron announced a night-time curfew in Paris and eight other cities to try to curb the rapid spread of Covid-19 in the country.
The measure – which will apply from 21:00 to 06:00 – will come into effect from Saturday and last for at least four weeks. A public health emergency has also been declared.

What else is happening in Europe?
Across Europe, governments are introducing new restrictions to battle a second wave of infections.

On Wednesday, Germany announced that bars and restaurants in higher-risk areas must close early. The country recorded 6,638 new cases on Thursday – the highest daily figure since the start of the pandemic.
A partial lockdown has also come into force in the Netherlands and cafes and restaurants are closing.

Earlier, Spain’s north-eastern region of Catalonia said bars and restaurants would close for 15 days from Thursday.

And the Czech Republic has shut schools and bars. It has the highest rate of infection in Europe over the past two weeks, at 581.3 cases per 100,000 people.

The Irish government announced a ban on household visits from Thursday night, but childcare and visits on compassionate grounds will still be allowed.

What are the new measures in France?
The night-time curfew was announced by President Macron on Wednesday, and it will apply to the capital Paris and its suburbs as well as Marseille, Lyon, Lille, Saint-Etienne, Rouen, Toulouse, Grenoble and Montpellier.

Affecting around 22 million people, it will be applied for four weeks to begin with and Mr Macron’s government will seek to extend it to six.
The measures will stop people visiting restaurants and private homes during the evening and night-time, Mr Macron explained.

Residents will need a valid reason to be outside their homes during the hours of curfew, the president said, adding that he understood that a curfew was a “hard” thing to ask people to do.

Essential trips will be permitted. Anyone found breaking the curfew will be fined €135 (£121).

Schools will remain open and people will still be able to travel between regions during the day.

Businesses that suffer financially due to the new measures will be eligible for state aid, Mr Macron said, adding that a second nationwide lockdown would be “disproportionate”.

  • Opuni-Agongo trial: AG’s witness’ donation to NPP 2020 campaign pops up in court.

Opuni-Agongo trial: AG’s witness’ donation to NPP 2020 campaign pops up in court.

A key prosecution witness in the state’s case against former COCOBOD CEO and two others confirmed in court that he donated motorcycles to the governing New Patriotic Party campaign team in September.

Dr. Yaw Adu-Ampomah’s donation of 35 motorcycles and other items was to boost the fortunes of the NPP in the 2020 general elections in December.

His admission in court sent tongues wagging as the case he has been giving evidence in court has been tagged as a politically motivated trial.

Former CEO of Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Dr Stephen Opuni, businessman Seidu Agongo and Agricult Ghana Company Limited, are facing 27 charges of willfully causing financial loss of GH¢217 to the state, through three separate fertiliser supply contracts between 2014 and 2016.

They have pleaded not guilty to all the charges and are on self-recognisance bail of GH¢300,000 each.

The NDC Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo has instance described the ongoing trial as nothing short of “naked persecution” of the opposition party.
Counsel for the accused have had cause to, on some occasions, drew the court’s attention to comments made by top government officials including a deputy Attorney General and even President Nana Akufo-Addo himself, which to them clearly vindicate their long-held conviction of a political trial.

Dr. Adu-Ampomah, according to a news report reproduced by Ghanaweb, had during a short ceremony held in the Eastern Regional capital, Koforidua, where the motorcycles and other items were donated to the NPP, charged the party to engage in a door-to-door campaign because this year’s electioneering campaign will be different from previous ones.
The items were reportedly distributed to 18 constituencies in the Eastern region particularly where the NPP has no MP, to aid them in their campaign ahead of the elections.

But when asked under cross-examination by Mr. Nutifafa Nutsukpui, stand-in lead counsel for the second and third accused persons – Seidu Agongo and Agricult Ghana Ltd – if he was a member of the NPP, Dr. Adu-Ampomah answered in the negative.

“No my Lord,” the star witness told the court on Wednesday, October 7, 2020.
Nutifafa pushed further, “sir I put it to you that your evidence here is coloured by your political persuasion”.

But the witness replied, “No my Lord, my evidence is guided by my being a Ghanaian and as part of my civil responsibility. If anything is going against Ghana it is my right to stand against it.”

Meanwhile, cross-examination of Dr. Yaw Adu-Ampomah who has been in the witness box for almost a year ended on October 7 upon the instruction of the trial judge, Justice Clemence Jackson Honyenuga, who was recently promoted to the Supreme Court sitting in as addition High Court judge.

Mfantseman Netizens Rejects Widow of the late MP Ekow Hayford

The Concerned youth and citizens of the mfantseman constituency have kicked against the proposed nomination of the widow of the murdered Member of Parliament (MP), Mr Ekow Keansah Hayford as the new Parliamentary Candidate to lead the Party in the 2020 polls.

The name of Mrs Ophelia Hayford, the wife of the deceased MP had come up strongly and sources say the National Executive Council (NEC) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was considering presenting her soon.

But the Concerned Youth of the Constituency had asked the NEC to rather consider Mr. James Korsah – Brown as the replacement of the late Member of Parliament ( MP) Ekow Quansah Hayford to help retain the party’s seat in the Coming December 2020 polls.

Mr. James Korsah-Brown came second in the Constituency’s NPP Parliamentary Primaries earlier this year.

“ We recommend Mr. James Korsah – Brown to the NEC to be the replacement of our deceased MP as he is known to be active and has immensely contributed his quota towards the development of Mfantseman Constituency”.

Pengmediagh gathered on Wednesday that Mrs. Ophelia Hayford, a Police Officer had tendered in a resignation letter to the Police Administration.

In a press statement signed and copied to the pengmediagh on Wednesday, Mr. Edward Afful Agyire, the conveyor of the group appealed to NEC to halt its decision and have a proper dialogue with stakeholders before a suitable and formidable candidate could be appointed and presented.

Its said the decision on a successor should be done with a full consideration into the future development and for the good people of Mfantseman.

It noted that if the NEC refused to pay heed to their concerns, then the Party may lose the seat to the opposition party in the 2020 election.

It emphatically raised concerns that the “ No wife no Vote” placards and chanting at the house of the late MPs house was not a representation made of their interest as a party.

The statement said that the intended decision by NEC has already started dividing the party in the constituency since some party faithful have threatened to vote against it.

“ We have never seen the wife of the late MP on any political campaign in the constituency, we are not aware if she is a card bearing member of the party or not, “ He added.

Mr. Hayford was brutally shot and killed by a group of gun men suspected to be armed robbers, on Thursday, October 08, on his way from a campaign tour on the Abeadze-Dominase road.

NPP are Calling my Lawyers to abandon Me, So I will be Jailed- MP for Assin Cries Out

Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has opened up about his pending contempt case for the first time.

Speaking on the Wednesday, October 14, 2020, edition of the Seat Show on Net2 TV, the MP revealed that some members of his own political party have made calls to his lawyer, Kwame Gyan, impressing on him to leave him to his fate.

“All those calling my lawyer that I should be left alone to be jailed, the case is not over so I am not going to say anything about it. If you are not brave you won’t support the NPP because I have NPP members calling my lawyer to ask him why he won’t leave me so I get jailed,” he stated

Mr Agyapong however made reference to a quotation in the bible and said the criticisms and sabotage from people within his party is something that is expected.

“The bible says that any leader who is not criticized by some of his people means that he is not doing something right. So obviously you will get people who don’t like you,” he said.

Revealing why persons within his own political party will be after his head, the influential NPP member said it is because some people fear he may be nurturing a presidential ambition and mentioned that he is rather focused on growing his businesses, making more money and creating employment opportunities.

“They are saying I want to become president, me Kennedy Agyapong. Just give me work so I can make some cash and open industries. If you know the industries I am putting up, I want be president of Tema (industrial area) instead. Those who want to be president are there, just give me contracts, case closed. Stop the envy and asking that I be jailed, for contempt how long will I even be jailed for?” he questioned.

The Member of Parliament for Assin Central, verbally attacked a High Court Judge, Justice Amos Wuntah Wuni, on same Net2 TV for issuing an injunction against him in a land dispute.

The MP’s tirade on live TV went as far as him calling the judge a “fool” for which he has been asked by a high court to come and explain why he should not be punished for contempt.

In a related development, lawyers of the MP have won an argument at the Supreme Court which on Wednesday October 14, 2020 ordered Justice Wuntah Wuni to step aside from presiding over the MP’s contempt case.

ASP Ophelia Hayford has resigned from the Police Service to replace her husband as MP

Ophelia Hayford, the wife of murdered Member of Parliament for Mfantseman has tendered in her resignation as an officer of the Ghana Police Service ahead of a likely confirmation as her husband’s replacement on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party in the December polls.

According to the General Secretary of the NPP, John Boadu, Madam Ophelia, who holds the rank of an Assistant Superintendent of the Ghana Police Service, has resigned in order to take up her new role following the murder of her husband and the apparent unanimous endorsement she received from party members and Mfantseman constituents.

Yes, it is to a large extent true. I have been to the constituency several times and the whole constituency leadership and party members, the regional [Executive] setup and the national [Executive] setup deem it fit that his wife [Ophelia] is the backbone of the husband,” Mr Boadu said in a Joynews interview monitored by GhanaWeb.

She knows the constituency very well and considering the large support that the husband had and the kind of difficulties that the constituency is going through, a lot more of the constituents think that we should let the wife continue,” Mr Boadu added

Speaking further, the NPP General Secretary indicated that there is a massive consensus without any form of descent since the name of the late MP’s wife came up for consideration as a possible replacement of her husband and indicated that the party will formally announce a decision on her nomination later.

Mr Ekow Kwansah Hayford, the incumbent NPP MP of Mfantseman Constituency who was also the party’s candidate for the December 2020 polls, was killed by suspected robbers on Friday, October 9, 2020, when he and his campaign team were attacked on their way from a campaign activity within the constituency.

The MP had filed his nomination with the Electoral Commission a day before his death.

Based on provisions in Section 4 of the Public Elections Regulations 2020, C.I. 127, which states that: “Where at the close of nominations, but before the election, one of the candidates dies, a further period of 10 days shall be allowed for nominations,” the NPP has thus initiated the move to find his replacement.
