According to them, the over 40,000 shops in the market are connected to one electricity meter, a situation they described as taking a toll on their sales and businesses.

Speaking on Akoma FM‘s morning show GhanAkoma on Monday, November 16, Spokesperson for Kejetia Petty Traders Association Andrews Quophy lamented that “we cannot pay the bills because is too high”.

“Can you believe that this whole facility has only one meter so when the bill comes, it is shared among the traders and we think this is bad and it’s really affecting our business?”

The traders called on management of the market to allocate separate meters for each shop to settle the issue of high electricity bills.

Community Relations Officer for Contracta, builders of the market, Emmanuel Danso appealed to traders to exercise restraint as the technical team assiduously works to correct the defects.

President Akufo-Addo inaugurate the Passport Head Office in Accra. Looking on are Mrs. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey (left) and Nii Okei Kinka Dowuona VI (2nd left), Osu Mantse

President Akufo-Addo, on Friday, inaugurated a new Passport Head Office at Ridge in Accra to provide improved services in the acquisition and issuance of passports.

The new head office, which is a three level purpose-built edifice, comes with ancillary facilities such as meeting room, cafeteria for staff, and a well-structured records/ archival room among others.

The office is the culmination of positive interventions and reforms undertaken by the government to transform the operations of passport administration in the country.

Commissioning the building, President Akufo-Addo said the Passport Office had been struggling for many years to get an appropriate accommodation “and we can all agree that that appropriate accommodation had been obtained.”

He commended the Foreign Ministry under Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey for spearheading the transformation of passport administration and how she had distinguished herself as the front-liner in Ghana’s diplomacy.

“…We now have a process for obtaining passport that can be done in an objective and transparent manner.”

The President urged management and staff of the office to ensure that the place was well maintained and kept “and the purpose of efficient administration of the passport regime of the country” was achieved.

Ms. Botchwey, MP, said for nearly four years, her office had successfully implemented the online passport application system, which had phased out the manual application.

These interventions, she said, had eliminated the difficulties associated with the acquisition of passports, and had improved the turnout time for delivery.
Acquisition of passports has been improved tremendously with the establishment of passport application centres in Kumasi, Tamale, Ho, Takoradi, Koforidua, Tema and Sunyani, as well as PACS in Accra and Kumasi to expedite services.

The Foreign Minister said they were in the process of giving facelifts to all existing regional PACS to improve service delivery; and said they would soon commission a new PACS in Cape Coast, as well as a new premium centre in Tamale.

  • I’m not interested in begging to return – Allotey Jacobs on NDC suspension.

I’m not interested in begging to return – Allotey Jacobs on NDC suspension.

Social Commentator and suspended member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Bernard Allotey Jacobs says he has no intention of pleading with executives of the party to rescind their decision.

    Suspension

A letter addressed to Allotey Jacobs and signed by the National Chairman of the NDC, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, said he was suspended for “persistent anti-party conduct”.

“The Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the National Democratic Congress, acting on behalf of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party, at its meeting held on Wednesday, the 6th day of May, 2020, has suspended you forthwith as a member of the party, pursuant to articles 46(1), 46(6) and 46(8) of the party’s constitution for your persistent anti-party conduct,” the letter indicated.

    Allotey not begging

On Friday’s edition of ‘Adekye Nsroma’ on UTV, host of the show, Yaa Konama asked the former Central Regional Chairman of the NDC if he will plead with the party to take him back in the spirit of reconciliation following the demise of the founder of his party.

However, Allotey Jacobs said he’s not ‘interested’ in pleading with executives of the party and that any form of reconciliation should come from the party.

“I’m not interested; they should decide among themselves. After all, politics is about you, yourself, and people. I am not going to fight for me to be brought back . . . the progress of this country is more important and speaking the truth will be the bane of my political campaign if in the future I should be on the political trail . . . “

“If there should be a spirit of reconciliation then it should come from NDC, not me . . . I think I have done enough for NDC especially in bringing Prof Mills (late) to power. There are a lot of things people don’t know and there are things that young boys in the party write and insult, but I don’t want to talk about it. It’s the same thing they did to former President Rawlings but he’s gone and may he rest in peace,” he lamented.
