  • Stop shedding crocodile tears: NDP tells Mahama and the NDC

Stop shedding crocodile tears: NDP tells Mahama and the NDC

The National Democratic Party on Monday, 23rd November, 2020 cautioned the NDC against what it claims to be the shedding of crocodile tears over the demise of former President Rawlings.

According to the General Secretary of the NDP, when Jerry John Rawlings was alive, John Mahama and the NDC disrespected him and desperately wanted to silence him. And now that he is no more, they want to utilize his death to galvanize support for their failing political campaign ahead of the 2020 general elections.

He said, “We are troubled that some of these same persons, upon the demise of President Rawlings, now seek to lead in mourning the man; they have begun to shed crocodile tears. They spent thousands of dollars to sponsor videos made in Washington DC by one Kelvin Taylor, who is tipped to be information Minister in the event of a Mahama comeback, to insult President Rawlings in words, some of which we dare not repeat, and posted them all over the world through Facebook, WhatsApp, and other social media platforms.

Mr. Frimpong also accused Mahama and the NDC of endorsing the misdeeds of Kevin Taylor against Mr. and Mrs. Rawlings. He argued, “With the apparent endorsement of John Mahama and the NDC leadership, Kelvin Taylor said, and I quote, “Rawlings is a modern-day Judas and a hypocrite. He and his sleazy wife are greedy. He behaves as a lapdog to the NPP government and always kisses the ass of Nana Akufo-Addo anytime he gets the opportunity to speak about corruption.” He also went on to say and I quote, “JJ Rawlings is not God, he is bad Nationals and a modern-day Judas… and such a man does not even deserve to be a Statesman.” “JJ Rawlings is a coward… [you are] a hypocrite and a disgrace on the lap of a midget”.

  • GES ASSURES SCHOOL SAFETY AHEAD JANUARY 2021

GES ASSURES SCHOOL SAFETY AHEAD JANUARY 2021

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has assured parents and guardians that it will ensure the safety of all school environments ahead of reopening in January 2021.

Mr Victor Amponsah, an Official of the Special Education Division of the Ghana Education Service (GES) Headquarters in Accra, gave the assurance during a two-day training workshop for the regional advocacy taskforce on the “Back-To-School” Campaign in Wa.

He said apart from disinfecting all schools before the reopening date in January, students would also be provided with nose masks and hand sanitizers as well as have their temperatures checked at morning, afternoon and evening to ensure their safety whilst in school.

He said just as all schools would be impressed upon to create isolation centers, there would equally be a rapid response team in place by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to quickly deal with cases of students experiencing abnormal temperatures.

Mr Amponsah explained that the “Back-To-School” Campaign was therefore initiated as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and its associated effects on girls and education in the country.

He said students stayed home for long as a result of the outbreak of the virus and that was why the Director General of Education found it necessary to embark on the campaign to inform parents and all other stakeholders of the safety of the school environment and the need for them to also play their roles effectively to complement their efforts.

“During the Basic Education Certificate examination (BECE), we realized that some of the girls were not in school and those that were in school, some were pregnant”, he said and noted that it was the reason why they saw the need to include re-entry into the programme.

Mr Amponsah said the focus of the programme was therefore in four folds including education on COVID-19 and its protocols, safety of schools, pregnancy and re-entry, and the psychosocial effect of COVID-19 on students whose parents contracted the virus.

He said GES and its partner UNICEF therefore decided to embark on regional level training for stakeholders who would then replicate the training at the community level in order to allay the fears of parents and guardians and assure them that the school environment was safe for their children to return.

He said adequate measures have also been put in place to prevent stigmatization against students whose parents have contracted the disease.

Breaking News: Konadu Redraws from Presidential Polls

Former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings has withdrawn from the 2020 presidential polls, Starr News has learnt.

Starr News sources say Mrs Rawlings, who is also the Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Party (NDP), has informed the Electoral Commission of her decision.

The party is set to address a press conference today Monday, November 23, 2020.

Mrs Rawlings is the wife of former President JJ Rawlings, Ghana’s longest-serving leader, who died on November 12, 2020.

Founder and leader of United Progressive Party (UPP) Kwasi Addai Odike has advised former First Lady and wife of the late former president Jerry John Rawlings to pull out of next month’s general elections.

Mr. Odike believes withdrawing from the race will make Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings concentrate on her widowhood to ensure the former president is given the necessary dignity and befitting funeral.

Speaking on Akoma FM‘s morning show GhanAkoma last week, the UPP leader, who is one of the five presidential aspirants disqualified from the December 7 race, explained that “Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings has no place to gain sympathy votes because even 2016 when her husband was alive, she had less than 20,000 votes”.

“So, she should concentrate on her husband’s death and even withdraw from the electioneering race,” he added.

  • Amidu’s resignation will affect NPP more than NDC – Ben Ephson

Amidu’s resignation will affect NPP more than NDC – Ben Ephson

The resignation of Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu will impact on the electoral fortunes of both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic, renowned pollster Ben Ephson has said.

Ben Ephson predicted to GhanaWeb, that the ruling NPP is however likely to suffer more from Amidu’s resignation than the NDC.

He explained that, one of the promises that won the NPP the 2016 elections was the pledge to fight corruption and that, the resignation of Martin Amidu could cost them some swing voters.

Ben Ephson also remarked that Amidu’s ‘Government official 1’ charge against John Dramani Mahama, in the Airbus bribery scandal, will also impact on the number of votes the NDC is likely to poll in the upcoming elections.

Consequently, swing voters who vote based on corruption may decide not to take part in the elections because of the performance of the two candidates when it comes to the subject.

“For swing voters whose voting will be based on corruption, his work and resignation will not make them vote in the sense that they will want to vote for someone who, if elected, can make change. By identifying Government Official as Mahama, he has painted the corruption brush on NDC. And by resigning and giving the reasons, he has also painted the corruption brush on the NPP. So, if you are a swing voter and you were going to vote for Akufo-Addo because of Airbus, you will have a change of mind and probably stay away because the other ten candidates will make no impact”.

Ben Ephson, however, noted that the reaction of the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to the allegations by Martin Amidu could cause some changes and swing votes in his favour.

The NPP government came into the office to fight corruption and the resignation will affect NPP more. I must also say that the President’s reaction has also deemed the impact it will have on the NPP. Martin has alleged certain things and the President has also made certain allegations against Martin in the course of his work. But clearly, of the two parties, NPP will be affected more. So I think both parties will have their share.

Ben Ephson also that he anticipates, that the verbal exchange between Martin Amidu and the NPP may drag on for a while.

  • John Mahama asked us to approve Amidu as Special Prosecutor – Mahama Ayariga

John Mahama asked us to approve Amidu as Special Prosecutor – Mahama Ayariga

The role of former President John Dramani Mahama in the approval of Martin Amidu as Special Prosecutor has been revealed by the Member of Parliament for Central, Mahama Ayariga.

There is a widely held perception that the NDC flagbearer was against the appointment of Amidu as Special Prosecutor.

But in an interview with Citi FM, Mahama Ayariga disclosed that the Minority Members of Parliament were encouraged by John Mahama to approve Amidu as Special Prosecutor.

Mahama Ayariga divulged that the NDC had no issue with the appointment of Amidu, they, however, had reservations about the act that set up the office of the Special Prosecutor.

“President John Dramani Mahama gave us clearance to approve Amidu as Special Prosecutor and we did approve him. The issue of his medical record never came up in our discussion,” he said.

Mahama Ayariga was reacting to a claim by Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong that he has knowledge of the medical records of former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu.

Ayariga said he has at no point discussed the issue of Amidu’s medical record with Kennedy Agyapong.

“I don’t have any medical records of my uncle, Martin Amidu. I think that it’s unfortunate that I’m being put in the centre of this whole controversy…I think we should focus on the real reasons why he has resigned and deal with it.”

“Let me put on record that I don’t have any medical records of him [Amidu] being sent to Germany for the treatment… I don’t recall having discussions with honourable Kennedy in which I made reservations about the medical condition and treatment in Germany etc.”

He pleaded: “I’m fighting my matter in Court and I don’t want to be in this brouhaha about his [Martin Amidu] decision to resign.”
