  • We are sorry for brutalising soldiers – Obom-Domeabra residents

We are sorry for brutalising soldiers – Obom-Domeabra residents

The Odum Plala Okyeame, Okyeame Adukwei on behalf of the residents of Obom-Domeabra has apologised to the military and the entire nation for brutalising two soldiers at Dome Faase earlier this week.

According to him, they mistook the soldiers for land guards hence the unwarranted attack on them.

“We thought they were land guards, but we have come to realise that they are soldiers and so we are very sorry. We are not justifying that landguards deserve to be brutalised but the President said he has stopped landguards from operating and i am not justifying our actions because every life matters. We really apologise,” he said.

Speaking on Atinka FM’s AM Drive, hosted by Ekourba Gyasi, Okyeame Adukwei admitted that the youth who attacked the soldiers had faulted, therefore calling on the military to forgive them.

However, he said they had complained about the mistreatment by those who were claiming the land, including destroying their farm produce on several occasions but they had no positive response from their authorities.

Soon after the clash between the soldiers and residents, about three hundred soldiers reportedly stormed Obom-Domeabra to retaliate and as well look for two missing guns.

It was reported that all the men in the town fled leaving their wives and children at home.

When the military got to the town, they went to each house to search for their guns and marched all the women to a park as a form of punishment.

The Deputy Defence Minister, Derrick Oduro made it known that the soldiers were sent there by their authorities, adding that the military will deal with the people of Obom Domeabra for attacking the soldiers.

Meanwhile, reacting to the Defence Minister’s comments, Okyeame Adukwei said the military men in question had been stationed on the disputed land for a while, acting like landguards and therefore they did not believe those soldiers were sent by their authorities.

He, therefore, called on government to come out with the truth and intervene on their behalf, stating that they had occupied the land for so many years without knowing it belonged to some people of Akyem.

“They have hidden the truth on what really happened from the public. We are appealing to the President, if it is true that he sent them, then he should intervene because we have all gone to hide in the bush and we do not know where our children and wives are,” he said.

Okyeame Adukwei added, “The authorities should exclude the soldiers from this matter and bring in the police to help solve it peacefully. We are in an election year and we do not want chaos. We have been to the site several times and we saw land guards in army uniforms so we thought these two soldiers were land guards.”

He added that the people of Dome Faase intend to send the matter to court immediately after the press conference, adding that it was unfortunate the issue took a violent turn.

  • 40 ministers are enough to run this country – PPP

40 ministers are enough to run this country – PPP

The Progressive Peoples Party (PPP) has said one of the key anti-corruption steps its 2020 manifesto will tackle is the appointment of too many people into government.

PPP Communications Director, Paa Kow Ackon, said Ghana does not need more than 40 minsters in government.

“The…issue we have to deal with is to reduce the number of ministers. 123 ministers? What is the point? We think all the regions we have and our population, we should not have more than 40 ministers. 40 ministers is enough to run our country,” he said.

The PPP Communications Director was speaking at the launch of the Citizens’ Anti-Corruption Manifesto on Wednesday, August 26, 2020 at the Coconut Grove Regency Hotel in Accra.

The citizens’ manifesto is a project that seeks to inform strategic policy direction for the political parties before they are elected into office.

The project is funded by STAR-Ghana Foundation with support from UKAid and European Union.

It is titled, “Making All Voices Count in the 2020 Anti-Corruption Agenda of Political Parties’ Manifestoes” and reveals, among other things that, citizens want legislative reforms to prioritise stronger sanctions against proceeds against criminal activity.

On the administrative fronts, citizens proposed that there should be an introduction of anti-corruption and integrity curricula in schools.

Paa Kow Ackon said the PPP will incorporate many of the recommendations in the citizens’ anti-corruption manifesto because, they are consistent with its understanding of good governance.

“It is important for us to also look at the appointment mechanism [of government officials]. You can’t appoint your family friends, colleagues into government. If they misapply funds, you can’t punish them or tell the Special Prosecutor to take them on…these are the critical issues that we must take them on,” he added.

The PPP, founded by Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom, formerly a staunch member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), was tipped to be the third force after the NPP and the NDC during the 2012 elections but it failed to impress after the polls.

  • NPP’s delivery tracker now ghost tracker – Ablakwa

NPP’s delivery tracker now ghost tracker – Ablakwa

The Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has said persons seeking to occupy the office of President of the country must be willing to subject themselves to the scrutiny of the people for whom they will be working when voted into government.

The North Tongu MP has, therefore, called on Ghanaians to safeguard the purity of the country’s democracy.

This follows comments by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) suggesting that it is not interested in a presidential debate leading to the December polls.

In a post on Facebook, the opposition MP, who is also the Ranking Member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, condemned the NPP for taking glory for projects that, according to him, they did not initiate during a recent town hall meeting addressed by Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Mr Ablakwa stated: “With every passing day, the NPP’s delivery tracker seems to be fast-gaining infamy as a ghost tracker.

“Many individuals, communities and reputable organisations have had to issue embarrassing disclaimers either exposing non-existent projects or protecting their ownership over projects they laboured to erect without any government support. Independent media fact-checks have revealed even more dodgy claims.”

Mr Ablakwa, therefore, urged Ghanaians to reflect on whether or not the governing NPP’s 2020 manifesto is a credible blueprint for providing solutions to the needs of the citizenry.

“Dr Bawumia’s uninspiring effort to convince Ghanaians they deserve more than the abysmal 14% our empirical and surgical scorecard returned on its 2016 manifesto implementation has totally collapsed like a pack of dominoes and further dented his tottering image.

“Beyond the damage to the credibility of the Akufo-Addo administration, we must reflect on the implications, particularly, for the NPP’s 2020 manifesto. With government officials finally conceding to a discredited database, the question is: how can the NPP’s 2020 manifesto be regarded as a credible blueprint for addressing the real needs and aspirations of Ghanaians? In much clearer terms – if your shady tracker lists roads, hospitals, bridges, AstroTurfs and schools which cannot be found anywhere, it is only logical to conclude that your manifesto proceeds on a dubious foundation and it is the people in the aforementioned communities who are bound to be shortchanged.”

He indicated that the main opposition National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) manifesto which is scheduled to be launched on Monday, 31 August 2020, will provide hope to the citizenry having been tailored to suit the needs of the people.

“One can therefore immediately see the wisdom of the NDC leadership when they chose to embark on a people’s manifesto which our opponents ridiculed. Clearly, you cannot get it wrong when you go to the people and engage them directly on what constitutes their needs, hopes and aspirations. Certainly, the NDC is better positioned to present a far superior manifesto on Monday. A manifesto from the people and for the people as it ought to be.”

The North Tongu MP said he now understands why President Nana Akufo-Addo is shying away from debating John Mahama.

“It can now be understood why President Akufo-Addo is running away from a debate with former President John Mahama despite the latter’s passionate appeals. When your record is defined by ghost projects and blatant deception which has resulted in a gaping trust deficit, you will obviously not present yourself to the Bukom Boxing Arena, not because that is another JM legacy but more because you need to desperately avoid a TKO from Sumaila Ndewura Jakpa’s descendant.”

According to Mr Ablakwa, politicians seeking to occupy the highest office of the land should have no choice in deciding if they want to debate or not.

In his opinion, “We must all agree that no matter the excuse, no politician especially those seeking to occupy the highest office of the land should have a choice whether to debate or not. Employees cannot determine that they won’t agree to be interviewed and yet expect to be hired by employers who in this case are the masses of this country. No functioning democracy worth its salt allows those managing national resources and those seeking to superintend over same to escape scrutiny with such utter contempt.”

He added: “The Ghanaian people as employers must no longer be tolerant of conduct that undermines our democratic purity. We actually should be having multiple presidential debates not one.”

“When you are continuously removing pants and showing nipples like a pono auditions which company will take you seriously? Don’t say us when it’s just you, shut up and suffer your misery instead of disrespecting the creative arts field, some of us have made a living out of it and created jobs for others through it.
