President Denies Interfering With Amidu’s Job

President Nana Akufo-Addo has dismissed claims by the immediate-past Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu, that he interferes with his investigative work.

Mr Amidu, it would be recalled, on Monday, November 16, 2020, tendered in his resignation in a letter addressed to Mr Akufo-Addo.

In the letter, Mr Amidu, among other things, accused the President of interfering with investigation works into alleged corruption cases.

He mentioned for instance that the President sought to interfere with his corruption risk investigation into the controversial Agyapa Royalties deal.

But the President, through his Secretary, Nana Bediatuo Asante, has responded to each of the claims made against him by the Mr Amidu.

In a letter addressed to Mr Amidu and signed by Mr Asante, the President made it clear that throughout the tenure of Mr Amidu, he (Mr Akufo-Addo) nor any member of his government interfered or sought to interfere with his work.

According to the Presidency, in Mr Amidu’s letter to the President dated October 16, 2020, he stated, in part in relation to the novel nature of the report on the analysis of the risk of corruption and anti-corruption assessment of the gold royalties monetization transaction that “this has been made possible by the courage and commitment of H.E. the President of Ghana on redeeming the promise he made to Ghanaians when he was a Presidential candidate of a political party to establish an independent anti-corruption statutory entity to male meaningful any real commitment to prevent and fight corruption.

The Presidency stated that on August 3, 2020, Mr Amidu in a letter to the Chief of Staff at the Office of the President, noted that “I have remained in this Office this long out of personal respect for the President’s shared commitment with me to fight corruption.”

Thus, the Presidency says it found it surprising that Mr Amidu will come out to question the commitment of President Akufo-Addo as far as the fight against corruption is concerned and even go on to accuse him (Akufo-Addo) of interfering with investigative works into alleged corruption cases.

The Presidency could not also understand why even before the President had been given the opportunity to reacts to the contents of Mr Amidu’s four-page letter, it had been circulated into the public domain prior to receipt by Mr Akufo-Addo.

Fire guts parts of Odawna market again.

Hundreds of stalls at the Odawna Market at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra are on fire following an outbreak, Wednesday dawn.

The fire, which eyewitnesses say has been raging on for hours, has left residents of the area and shop owners at the market, also known as the Pedestrian Shopping Mall in shock.

Although the cause of the fire remains unknown, videos show the fire spreading to other parts of the market.

Already, a crowd has gathered at the scene along with personnel from the police and fire service.
An eyewitness who spoke to JoyNews accused some market women of being responsible for the spread of the fire.

According to the witness, when the personnel from the fire service got to the scene, the entrance of the market had been blocked, making it impossible for the fire tender to move to where the fire was.

He explained that when the personnel got in touch with the market women to move their items, they refused to allow the men in the area to assist.

“Around 10:30 to 11 pm I was moving from the VIP Station heading to the market when I saw smoke. It was from a small fire. We started to put it out with water that we could find before rushing to call the fire service.”

The eyewitness further narrated that “the team rushed over with a vehicle and asked for the entrance to be cleared but the women insisted that they will move the items alone. When we finally had access to the market, we decided to remove all the cylinders from the stores close to the fire to prevent an explosion but again the women refused.”

“They accused us of trying to steal their stuff and locked up the market again,” he added.

“Within seconds, a cylinder exploded and caused the fire to spread. The fire service tried to put it out but it was difficult because of the cylinders and the types of items lying around. The fire service came back with about 10 cars but the fire is still burning.”

This is, however, not the first time, the Odawna market has caught fire.

In January last year, about 80 stalls were destroyed after fire swept through the market.

Although no deaths or injuries were recorded, eyewitnesses say large quantities of goods of assorted nature belonging to traders were lost along with huge sums of money.

Traders at new Kejetia market cry over high electricity bills .

Traders at the newly constructed Kejetia market are complaining of high electricity bills and rampant defects on the facility.

According to them, the over 40,000 shops in the market are connected to one electricity meter, a situation they described as taking a toll on their sales and businesses.

The over $298 million facility adjudged to be the biggest market in West Africa is fast developing defects, the traders also complained.

Speaking on Akoma FM‘s morning show GhanAkoma on Monday, November 16, Spokesperson for Kejetia Petty Traders Association Andrews Quophy lamented that “we cannot pay the bills because is too high”.

“Can you believe that this whole facility has only one meter so when the bill comes, it is shared among the traders and we think this is bad and it’s really affecting our business?”

The traders called on management of the market to allocate separate meters for each shop to settle the issue of high electricity bills.

Community Relations Officer for Contracta, builders of the market, Emmanuel Danso appealed to traders to exercise restraint as the technical team assiduously works to correct the defects.

  • Nigeria Sars protest: Army chief denies firing live bullets at Lagos protesters.

Nigeria Sars protest: Army chief denies firing live bullets at Lagos protesters.

The Nigerian army has rejected claims it killed unarmed protesters at a rally in Lagos in October, saying its soldiers were firing blank bullets.

Brigadier General Ahmed Taiwo presented video evidence to back up his claims made to a panel of inquiry.

Amnesty International says 12 people were killed when soldiers opened fire on a protest about police brutality in the wealthy Lagos suburb of Lekki.

Multiple eyewitnesses have told the BBC they saw soldiers shoot people.
Some 1,000 protesters had gathered at the Lekki toll gate on 20 October to prevent cars using a major motorway. Soldiers were reportedly seen barricading the protest site moments before the shooting started.

In video footage shared on social media at the time, shots could be heard as protesters sat down, locked arms and sang the national anthem together. Live footage was also streamed from the scene showing protesters tending to the wounded.

The attack had followed days of protests against the much-hated police unit, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (Sars), which had morphed into greater calls for better governance.

Brig Gen Taiwo told the judicial panel investigating alleged historic abuses by Sars there had been “a lot of misinformation” about his troops. Their “only crime was to report for duty to protect us all”.
He pointed to video showing what appeared to be soldiers at the scene. “You can see they are firing in the air, and firing blank ammunitions.”

Responding to a claim that a witness had seen a dead body at the scene, he said “the casualty she saw had been overcome by shock”, AFP news agency reports.
It is not clear if he will respond to the many other accounts from eyewitnesses.

Since the shooting those involved in the protests say they are being targeted by the government, the BBC’s Mayeni Jones reports.

A number of protesters and companies say their bank accounts have been frozen and others have been arrested. The passport of a lawyer who organised legal aid for the protesters was seized as she tried to leave the country, although it has now been returned to her.

Nationwide protests erupted on 8 October calling for an end to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, which had been accused of widespread human rights violations, including illegal detention, torture and extrajudicial killings.

President Muhammadu Buhari disbanded the squad a few days later, but the protests continued with demands for more changes in the security forces and reforms to the way the country is run.

Following the 20 October attack, Amnesty International Nigeria said it had evidence from hospital records and witnesses to show that “the Nigerian military opened fire on thousands of people who were peacefully calling for good governance and an end to police brutality”.

The Lagos state government said 30 people had been injured with one fatality.

Lagos and other parts of Nigeria have seen buildings torched, shopping centres looted and prisons attacked since the shooting.

Nigeria’s vice-president has promised justice for victims shot during the protests amid widespread condemnation from international leaders.
