  • N/R: NPP will retain Wulensi seat; increase Nana Addo’s vote margin – Mac Manu.

N/R: NPP will retain Wulensi seat; increase Nana Addo’s vote margin – Mac Manu.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it will retain the Wulensi seat in the Northern Region.

It is also confident of increasing votes for President Akufo-Addo in the upcoming polls.

An aspirant Alhaji Abdulai Haruna who petitioned party executives over his reservations about the outcome of the NPP parliamentary primaries in the Wulensi constituency has resolved his differences with the party.

He was contesting incumbent MP, Thomas Donkor Ogajah. The incumbent beat him with four votes.

Mr. Haruna and his supporters have subsequently reconciled with the party and promised to work for the victory of the NPP.

Speaking to Citi News after a meeting with Alhaji Abdulai Haruna and his supporters, Campaign Manager of the NPP, Peter Mc-Manu said the party is more than united to win the constituency.

“I want to extend appreciation to the people of Wulensi especially Alhaji Abdulai Haruna and use the occasion to congratulate the people for the unity they have brought to the party in Wulensi and the good works they have done which gives me hope that we are going to retain the seat and increase the margin of vote for the President,” he said.

Some aggrieved NPP members who claim they were unjustifiably disqualified from contesting in the party’s parliamentary primaries have resolved to contest the polls as independent candidates.

Constituencies, where such issues have been reported, include Asokwa, Bekwai and Ahafo-Ano-North.

The NPP had put in place a national reconciliation committee to engage aggrieved candidates going independent.

President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Bawumia had been urging party supporters not to back members going independent.

The NPP has written to Parliament to complain about the MP for Fomena in the Ashanti Region, Amoako Andrew Asiamah, who has filed to contest as an independent parliamentary candidate.

“By so doing, he has presumably vacated his seat in Parliament pursuant to Article 97(1)(g) of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic,” the party indicated.

The NPP does not expect the decision of some of its members to contest as independent candidates in the December polls to affect its chances.

Deputy General Secretary of the party, Nana Obiri Boahen, says the party has informed all such candidates that they cease to be members of the NPP under Article 3(9) of its constitution.

Nana Obiri Boahen in a Citi News interview said such occurrences are always to be expected but will be properly managed.

“Sometimes, you will not have all the numbers. It is just unfortunate that they have decided to go away. We are dealing with human beings and political parties are run by human beings so it is a natural phenomenon. So we need not be surprised by some of these things. In NPP, thousands will go away and thousands will come in. Never mind because there is nothing we can do. People have spoken and impressed on them, so they want to go with them so that they don’t run them down”, he noted.

  • Multipurpose administrative block inaugurated at Accra Academy.

Multipurpose administrative block inaugurated at Accra Academy.

Accra Academy has inaugurated a newly built multipurpose administrative block to facilitate and enhance the day-to-day management of the senior high school.

The two-storey edifice, worth about GH¢109 million, has been designed to house, among other facilities, a physical and an electronic library, an ICT centre and some special managerial offices to meet modern technological trends relative to administration.

    New block
The project which started close to a decade ago by the government under the GETFund facility, was however handed over to the school as an empty building as the contract did not include furnishing it.

Speaking at a ceremony in Accra to officially receive the project from the consultant in charge, Masuab Consult, the Headmaster of Accra Academy, Mr Emmanuel Ofoe Fiemawhle, was hopeful that the new facility would make the administration of the school less burdensome and enhance productivity.

    Old block

He indicated that the old administration had outlived its purpose, obsolete and therefore, needed to be replaced to keep the school running at a desired pace.
The present administration block was to serve a certain number of students and staff within a certain period. You will realise that now, we are in a technological world where data processes [and] information have become the norm of our administrative work. The place is not structured to have some of these facilities and the number has also increased.

“And so with this new facility, it is going to enhance administrative work in the sense that all those offices that were hitherto not part of the old structure can now have a space and then the needed working tool can be provided for them.

“This will enhance data processing, information on staff and students, appraisal of work outputs for staff and response to request from outside the school,” he averred.

    Furnishing

Mr Fiemawhle further indicated that the school would as soon possible, commence “post-handing over” processes to get the facility fully furnished to serve its purpose, adding that they would explore all possible means of funding to get it done.

    ‘Dr. UN’ has been arrested.

Self-acclaimed Global Ambassador for the United Nations (UN), Kwame Fordjour, popularly known as ‘Dr. UN’ has been arrested.

He was arrested on the premises of Kumasi based Hello-FM by National Security operatives.

Last month, ‘Dr UN’ described as one of the greatest conmen in the annals of the country’s entertainment history, trended for all the wrong reasons.

A ‘diplomat’ and ‘global ambassador’ by self-description, with a doctorate degree that has its veracity as questionable as his personality, Fordjour accomplished a scam on a magnitude almost never experienced in the country.

Under the pretense of partnering with the United Nations and the respected legacy of the late Dr Kofi Annan, he contrived to organize an awards ceremony (succeeded quite brilliantly) and presented trophies and citations to over 20 accomplished Ghanaian personalities who he described as having achieved extraordinary feats in their endeavors.

He thus surpassed his own feat as one of the biggest frauds in the country’s history.

According to a report filed by PeaceFM’s correspondent and HelloFM’s General Manager, Samson K. Nyamekye, ‘Dr. UN’ has been on the radar of the security agencies for quite some time now, after a fake award ceremony he organized in Kumasi, Ashanti Region.

He was arrested after it was reported that the award scheme which was held in 2018 was fake and was later granted bail.

The court subsequently issued an arrest warrant after he flouted his bail conditions.

In view of this when news went out that Kwame Fordjour was in the studios of Hello FM, National Security operatives stormed the place to effect his arrest.

According to Samson Nyamkeye, ‘Dr UN’ has been remanded for 14 days.

Opuni-Agongo trial: AG’s witness’ donation to NPP 2020 campaign pops up in court.

A key prosecution witness in the state’s case against former COCOBOD CEO and two others confirmed in court that he donated motorcycles to the governing New Patriotic Party campaign team in September.

Dr. Yaw Adu-Ampomah’s donation of 35 motorcycles and other items was to boost the fortunes of the NPP in the 2020 general elections in December.

His admission in court sent tongues wagging as the case he has been giving evidence in court has been tagged as a politically motivated trial.

Former CEO of Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Dr Stephen Opuni, businessman Seidu Agongo and Agricult Ghana Company Limited, are facing 27 charges of willfully causing financial loss of GH¢217 to the state, through three separate fertiliser supply contracts between 2014 and 2016.

They have pleaded not guilty to all the charges and are on self-recognisance bail of GH¢300,000 each.

The NDC Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo has instance described the ongoing trial as nothing short of “naked persecution” of the opposition party.
Counsel for the accused have had cause to, on some occasions, drew the court’s attention to comments made by top government officials including a deputy Attorney General and even President Nana Akufo-Addo himself, which to them clearly vindicate their long-held conviction of a political trial.

Dr. Adu-Ampomah, according to a news report reproduced by Ghanaweb, had during a short ceremony held in the Eastern Regional capital, Koforidua, where the motorcycles and other items were donated to the NPP, charged the party to engage in a door-to-door campaign because this year’s electioneering campaign will be different from previous ones.
The items were reportedly distributed to 18 constituencies in the Eastern region particularly where the NPP has no MP, to aid them in their campaign ahead of the elections.

But when asked under cross-examination by Mr. Nutifafa Nutsukpui, stand-in lead counsel for the second and third accused persons – Seidu Agongo and Agricult Ghana Ltd – if he was a member of the NPP, Dr. Adu-Ampomah answered in the negative.

“No my Lord,” the star witness told the court on Wednesday, October 7, 2020.
Nutifafa pushed further, “sir I put it to you that your evidence here is coloured by your political persuasion”.

But the witness replied, “No my Lord, my evidence is guided by my being a Ghanaian and as part of my civil responsibility. If anything is going against Ghana it is my right to stand against it.”

Meanwhile, cross-examination of Dr. Yaw Adu-Ampomah who has been in the witness box for almost a year ended on October 7 upon the instruction of the trial judge, Justice Clemence Jackson Honyenuga, who was recently promoted to the Supreme Court sitting in as addition High Court judge.
