Ft. Lt Jerry John Rawlings who died at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital from Coronavirus on 12th November 2020 is said to have tomorrow been a week after his departure after battling with a little illness.

Family of the former president has stated that there won’t be any one-week celebration of the late statesman but citizens of the country who have sincere love for the ex-president have made cloth in honour of Rawlings just to celebrate his one week.

This piece of cloth appears exceptionally nice looking at the African designs which were used to decorate the material.

Rawlings was a staunch Pan-Africanist so it is in the right sense to depict his roots in his memorial cloth.

  • Don’t bury Jerry John Rawlings at Asomdwe Park – Kyiri Abosom warns

Don’t bury Jerry John Rawlings at Asomdwe Park – Kyiri Abosom warns

Popular prophet and the leader of Ghana Union Movement (GUM) has cautioned the state and family of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings against burying the statesman at Asomdwe Park.

Christian Kwabena Andrews, popularly known as Osofo Kyiri Abosom, told journalists that during a visit to Mr Rawlings to introduce his party sometime this year, the former President mentioned specifically that he did not want to the buried at that cemetery.

Asomdwee Park is Ghana’s first presidential mausoleum and the burial ground of the late President John Evans Atta Mills.

“The day I visited him at his residence before he died, he told me something that I intend to pass on to his family and the state. He told me he is praying for me to win and that if I win and he passes away, I should make sure that he is not buried at the presidential mausoleum. He told me he doesn’t want to be buried there,” Osofo Kyiri Abosom said in Twi.

“Rawlings told me he wants to be buried at a different place. So I will tell his wife [Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings]. I even have a recording of this on video. I can show it to you,” Kyiri Abosom told Journalists after arriving at the Rawlings’ residence to condole with the family.

The GUM leader explained that although the late former President did not specify where he would like to be buried, his hometown in the Volta Region, in his view, would be a good resting place.

He said Mr Rawlings even joked that he will haunt him [Kyiri Abosom] if he allows his body to be interred at the presidential mausoleum.

Talking about his campaign, he said he has the charisma and courage to lead Ghana like Mr Rawlings did and urged Ghanaians to vote for him on December 7, 2020.

He described the late President as a selfless and courageous statesman.

  • NDC will bury Rawlings, Akufo-Addo must stop ‘hijack’ attempts – Asiedu Nketia

NDC will bury Rawlings, Akufo-Addo must stop ‘hijack’ attempts – Asiedu Nketia

The General Secretary for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) says President Akufo-Addo should not “hijack” the burial activities of late former President Jerry John Rawlings.

Johnson Asiedu Nketia stated that the party would not be treated as a guest when it comes to the funeral arrangement of its founder.

“Everything about this funeral, so far, depicts an attempt by an opponent to hijack the funeral of the founding father of our political party, and we don’t think the funeral of our party founder ought to be organised somewhere, and we get invited,” he said.

He added, “We have directed all branches of our party countrywide to organise events that will give a fitting celebration of the life of our founder. We will participate (in the national funeral) but that will not stop us from organising our own thing.”

According to the NDC’s General Secretary, the president of the country and flagbearer of the NPP has failed to honour the late Rawlings as the founder of the opposition party in his commiseration to the bereaved family.

“We were sorely disappointed that Akufo-Addo, even in issuing a statement of condolence, refused or failed to recognize the fact that President Rawlings was the founder of the NDC.

“It is against all the different practices we have been engaged in, in the past, as far as the death of prominent members of the two political parties is concerned,” he added.

His comments come after the demise of the first president of the Fourth Republic, Jerry John Rawlings on November 12, at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital after contracting the deadly Covid-19.

After the demise of the founder of the party, an NDC delegation led by John Dramani Mahama visited the Rawlings’ family to share their condolences and also discuss the way forward.

Several political parties including the NPP and the NDC have suspended all campaign activities in honour of the late President.

President Akufo-Addo has also declared a 7-day national mourning period during which all flags will fly at half-mast in Mr Rawlings’ honour.

He has also tasked the Chief of Staff and the Rawlings’ family to work together and complete plans for the burial of the late head of state.

Rawlings’ Death: Zanetor Will Get Sympathy Votes – Ben Ephson

The death of former President Jerry Rawlings will be to the advantage of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Klottey Korle constituency of the Greater Accra region.

According to him, the daughter of the late President, Dr Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings, who is the Member of Parliament for the area, will get sympathy votes. The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is seeking to snatch the seat from the NDC in the December general election.

The NPP’s candidate, Prince Appiah Debrah, the party argued, has studied to show himself approved for the job.

The ruling party has intensified campaign in the constituency to unseat the NDC candidate.

But pollster Ben Ephson said the painful and sudden death of former President Rawlings will change the dynamics in the Klottey Korle constituency.

He explained that, given his influence in Ghana’s body politic and in that constituency in particular, “Zanetor will enjoy sympathy votes”.

“Rawlings has a sense of humour and I believe his daughter Zanetor will get sympathy votes,” he added.

However, Mr Ephson said the NDC, led by its presidential candidate, John Mahama, which is seeking re-election, might not benefit much from Mr Rawlings’ death.
