Ghana Faces Climate Challenges as Extreme Weather Patterns Intensify

Ghana is grappling with increasingly severe climate challenges, as unpredictable weather patterns continue to affect the nation’s agriculture, economy, and daily life. From relentless floods in urban centers to extended periods of drought in rural areas, the nation’s environment is showing signs of significant stress, raising concerns among experts and residents alike.

In the past year alone, regions across Ghana have experienced a series of extreme weather events. The northern regions, typically known for their arid conditions, faced unexpected flooding earlier this year. Torrential rains submerged entire communities, destroyed farmlands, and displaced thousands of people. The Upper East and Upper West Regions were particularly hard hit, with key agricultural areas left under water, threatening food security and the livelihoods of countless farmers.

Conversely, the southern parts of Ghana, which are usually the beneficiaries of regular rainfall, have witnessed prolonged dry spells. Farmers in the Ashanti, Eastern, and Central Regions have reported delayed planting seasons and reduced crop yields, particularly in staple crops like maize and cassava. The lack of rain has also led to water shortages in urban areas, with cities like Accra and Kumasi imposing water rationing to cope with the demand.

The economic implications of these climate changes are profound. Agriculture, which is the backbone of Ghana’s economy, is facing a crisis as unpredictable weather patterns disrupt planting and harvesting cycles. Many farmers are struggling to adapt, with traditional farming methods proving insufficient against the new climate realities. This has led to a drop in agricultural productivity, higher food prices, and increased pressure on rural communities.

Urban areas are also feeling the effects of the changing climate. Accra, the capital city, has seen a rise in flash floods due to poor drainage systems, exacerbated by heavy rainfall. The floods have damaged infrastructure, halted businesses, and displaced families, creating an urgent need for comprehensive urban planning and investment in resilient infrastructure.

Ghana’s government, recognizing the urgency of the situation, has been working on several initiatives to mitigate the impact of climate change. The Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation has been spearheading efforts to promote climate-resilient agriculture, improve water management, and strengthen disaster preparedness across the country. However, these efforts face challenges due to limited funding, lack of technical expertise, and the need for more robust data on climate patterns.

International organizations have also stepped in to support Ghana’s climate adaptation efforts. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the World Bank have provided financial and technical assistance to help the country build resilience against climate-related disasters. These collaborations have led to the development of early warning systems, improved agricultural practices, and the promotion of renewable energy sources as part of Ghana’s strategy to combat climate change.

Despite these efforts, the road ahead remains challenging. Experts warn that if current trends continue, Ghana could face even more severe weather events in the coming years, with potentially devastating impacts on the environment, economy, and society. The need for a coordinated, multi-stakeholder approach is more critical than ever, as Ghana works to safeguard its future against the unpredictable forces of climate change.

As the nation prepares for the next planting season, the focus is on building resilience and adapting to the new climate realities. Farmers are being encouraged to adopt climate-smart practices, such as crop diversification and conservation agriculture, to reduce vulnerability to extreme weather. Urban planners are also being urged to incorporate climate considerations into their designs to prevent further damage from floods and other disasters.

Ghana’s climate story is one of both challenge and opportunity. While the country faces significant risks, there is also a chance to innovate and lead by example in the fight against climate change. With the right policies, investments, and community engagement, Ghana can navigate these turbulent times and emerge stronger in its commitment to environmental sustainability.

  • The Mental Health Crisis Fueled by Corrupt Governance: A Call for Change

The Mental Health Crisis Fueled by Corrupt Governance: A Call for Change

Bismark Kwabla Kpobi, Executive Director of ASK Health Advocacy Foundation, has raised serious concerns about the detrimental impact of government corruption on the mental health of citizens. Despite being endowed with abundant natural resources such as gold, bauxite, timber, crude oil, and cocoa, the populace continues to suffer due to the self-serving and corrupt practices of government officials. These leaders, prioritizing their wealth over sustainable development and public welfare, have plunged the nation into socio-economic hardship, severely affecting the mental health of its citizens.

The pervasive incompetence and lack of foresight among government appointees have led to widespread stress, anxiety, and depression among the populace. As a result, many individuals turn to substance abuse to cope with suicidal thoughts and hunger. The negative effects of corrupt governance extend to societal issues such as marital breakdowns, high youth unemployment rates, and a decline in sexual health, with some resorting to dangerous aphrodisiacs that pose severe physical health risks, including organ damage and heart attacks.

    Also Read

Adding to the distress is the blatant disrespect and arrogance displayed by government officials, who often dismiss citizens as lazy or unqualified. Opportunities that once offered hope to the youth, such as careers in security services or positions in state institutions, now require substantial bribes or connections, further eroding the public’s trust and hope.

Citizens are left in a state of despair, their talents wasted in an environment that stifles their potential. Kpobi calls for a radical change in leadership behavior, emphasizing the need for accountability, maintenance of culture, and selfless governance to alleviate the suffering of the masses. He stresses the importance of mental health support, urging individuals not to succumb to despair or suicidal thoughts, but to seek help and remain safe.

Bismark Kwabla Kpobi concludes with a powerful plea: “One cannot attain total physical health without total mental health.” It is imperative for leaders to prioritize the well-being of the people and work towards creating a nation that values and uplifts every citizen.

  • Ghana to earn billions of dollars from 6 tree crops

Ghana to earn billions of dollars from 6 tree crops

Ghana is expected to earn billions of dollars from some six identified tree crops in the next decade.

The six crops including oil palm, cashew, coconut, rubber, shea and mango have the potential to generate $2 billion each annually to compete with cocoa and coffee in foreign exchange earnings.

However, because sectors of these crops have not been regulated for years, the country has next to nothing to show for same.

Disclosing this in an interview with Joy Business at the opening of a two-day workshop on regulation for the sectors at Prampram, Acting Chief Executive Officer of Tree Crop Development Authority (TCDA), William Quaitoo said “Cocoa brings in about $2 billion annually and President Akufo-Addo has charged TCDA to develop the sectors to earn same if not more in 10 years due to huge demand on the international market”.

Through the workshop, TCDA with the support of its partners is taking technical proposal from actors who are experienced on the field to bring to fore what can be done to regulate the sectors.

The proposed regulation will go to cabinet and then sent to parliament before it becomes binding for all stakeholders within production of the six crops to follow.

This process is expected to be completed latest by December, 2021.

The regulations, according to him will provide key and fine details of TCDA Act 2019 (ACT 1010) which mandates the authority to regulate and develop the six tree crops.

By regulating these sectors, the country will avoid instances where produce or products are banned on the international market for one violation or another.

Deputy Chief Executive Officer of TCDA in charge of Operations, Forster Boateng was particularly happy the authority is using an inclusive approach.

According to him, stakeholders put together for the workshop were from drawn from academia, private sector, civil society organizations among others.

About how TCDA would become an effective institution, he said the composition of its board and how useful lessons will be picked from other institutions will go a long way to help carry out its mandate.

“TCDA is expected to make huge impact as the private sector has about 25 members on the 29-member board which is first of its kind,” Mr. Boateng indicated

Meanwhile, Proforest is providing technical assistance and funding for the workshop, having played a major role in the processes leading to the passage of TCDA Act.

Senior Project Manager at Proforest, Africa, Afua Serwah Prempeh said commodity production can help economies but it must be done sustainably.

“Even though commodity production can help economies, there are negative externalities that may come out of it including infringement on human right and environmental problems,” she said.

Proforest’s engagement with private sector and government ensures that outcomes of their actions do not have negative impact on others.

The Ministry of Food and Agriculture, IFC and other stakeholders are committed to helping Tree Crop Development Authority get the regulation and subsequent development done.

  • 2021 Population Housing Census Exercise Comes off in Ghana

2021 Population Housing Census Exercise Comes off in Ghana

2021 Population Housing Census Exercise Comes off in Ghana

The usual decade exercise is underway from June 27th night to 11th July 2021 in Ghana and all persons in Ghana will be counted.

The Population Census is the official enumeration of all persons in a country at a specified time. The enumeration also implies the collection, compilation, evaluation, analysis, publication, and dissemination of demographic, social, and economic statistics relating to the population.

A Housing Census is the official enumeration of all living quarters (occupied and vacant) in a country at a specified time. This enumeration also implies the collection, compilation, evaluation, analysis, publication, and dissemination of statistical data pertaining to these living quarters and the occupants, and this is done every decade(10 years) and the enumerators are under oath not to disclose any information taken from respondents.

The Ghana 2021 Population and Housing Census (PHC) will consist of a population census and a housing census as one operation. The two censuses, though separate, constitute one statistical operation and they are not completely independent of each other because of the essential elements of each census which are common to both and are also with well-coordinated activities. In this way, the information on the population and living quarters can be more readily matched, and processing is facilitated, and extensive analysis can be carried out. This also makes it possible to relate to the housing census data, the information on demographic and economic characteristics of each household member that is routinely collected in the population census.

Ghana has conducted five post-independent population censuses in 1960, 1970, 1984, 2000 and 2010 with the last two consisting of both a population census and a housing census making the 2021 PHC the third Population and Housing Census to be conducted in Ghana. The 2021 PHC is designed to generate statistics that are essential for policy and planning purposes. It is therefore of the greatest importance to every person living in Ghana. The census information will be used for only statistical purposes and is not to be used for identifying people for taxation or punitive purposes.
