Zambian protest, Nigerians online fume, Ethiopia caution: South Africa Xenophobia

Offshoots of the latest xenophobic incidents in South Africa’s city of Johannesburg has sparked off citizen reactions in some African countries – specifically in Zambia, Nigeria, and Ethiopia.

    Concerned Zambians plan protest

A group of concerned citizens in Zambia have written to the police with notice of a peaceful march and gathering at the premises of the South African Embassy in the capital Lusaka.

The group said the march was “to show displeasure to the South African government for the horrific conduct exhibited by their citizens and complacent approach their government has taken.

The march planned for September 4 added: “is in no ways intended to cause any harm but just to communicate our concerns and observations,” the statement added. Clearance has yet to be given.

Ethiopia Embassy cautions citizens in SA – FANA report

The Ethiopian Embassy in South Africa advised Ethiopians to distance themselves from any confrontation and conflict until the current situation is stabilized.

It also advised them not to wear expensive pieces of jewelry and if possible, to close their shops, until peace is restored.

The Embassy also called on them to report any suspicious activity to the police or to contact the embassy using telephone numbers 012 346 42 57 and 012 346 29 47.

    Nigerians plan business retaliation

Nigeria’s government in a statement condemned the violence of Monday, September 2 but citizens on social media have severally condemned the violence and called for drastic action.

A 2017 video of South Africa’s former Deputy Police Minister, Bongani Mkongi, shared by a local portal, Signal Nigeria, has got Nigerians rattled.

Tweeps are calling for an economic boycott that could adversely affect South African business interests in Nigeria. Already there are calls for boycott of among others, MTN, Shoprite, DSTv and Stanbic bank.

A number of people are, however, quick to point out that the boycott will affect mostly Nigerians because most employees of these outlets are locals.

    September 2 Johannesburg violence

Looting and violence spread across several neighborhoods in the major cities of Pretoria and Johannesburg. It followed a spate of overnight attacks that appeared to target foreign-owned shops.

At least 50 shops were looted and burned in the southern Johannesburg suburbs of Malvern and Jeppestown. Police fired rubber bullets at looters as burnt cars were stranded on the roads.

Bheki Cele, South African Police Minister said: “For me, it’s pure criminality, people looting and all that, and using that as xenophobia. But for now, there is nothing that has sparked any form of conflict between South Africans and foreign nationals.

“We dealing with criminality rather than xenophobia at the present moment,” he added.

Police arrested 41 people for the violence in Johannesburg, while 8 others were arrested in Tembisa township, east of Johannesburg, and one person arrested in the capitol Pretoria, police said.

Monday’s violence followed similar incidents in Pretoria last week, in which protests led by taxi drivers saw several foreign-owned shops looted and torched.

Such violence breaks out sporadically in South Africa, where many nationals blame foreigners for high unemployment, particularly in manual labor.

Last week, Human Rights Watch reported that dozens of truck drivers in the country had died in attacks against foreigners since March 2018.

The report was released following a recent spate of xenophobic violence fueled by economic decline and record unemployment.

  • waterfalls in Ghana

    waterfalls in Ghana

There are quite a number of waterfalls in Ghana. Notable ones are the Kintampo Waterfalls, Boti Falls, Wli, Akaah, Fuller etc.

Waterfalls form part of the Ghana’s architecture and naturally create beautiful and attractive scenery which allure tourists, both indigenes and foreigners from the world over. According to the Ghana Tourism Authority, tourism is currently the fourth largest source of foreign exchange earnings estimated at US2.2 million in 2015.

Well, it even gets better, there’s good news. Dikoder.com can report that a new Waterfall has been discovered in Western North, one of the newly created Regions in Ghana.

The lucky town to have this Waterfall is Boinzan in the Sefwi Juaboso District.

Boinzan is a low lying town bothered with mountains to the west, north and south. It has a mesmerizing culture and beautiful people. Traditionally, it is the second town after Sefwi Wiawso which is now capital of the young region.

In an interview with dikoder.com , natives of the town disclosed that the Boinzan Waterfalls, as it’s affectionately called, was once enclosed by forest. Due to the rocky and hilly nature of the terrain, no one showed particular interest in uncovering what it had to offer until recently.

Many tourists including students, teachers, clubs, associations and individuals have already been to the site and have confirmed that indeed, it is a scene to behold.

By this publication, we draw the attention of Ghana Tourist Board to this wonderful discovery for proper mapping. This is a natural resource we can tab into to generat revenue and certainly boost tourism and our hospitality sub sector.

  • WORLD COCOA SUPPLY SURPLUS TO GROW IN 2019

WORLD COCOA SUPPLY SURPLUS TO GROW IN 2019

The global cocoa market will see a supply surplus of 71,900 tonnes in the current 2018/19 year, on the back of last year’s smaller surplus, Connecticut-based brokerage JSG Commodities said on Thursday.   That follows a surplus of 21,620 tonnes last year reported by the International Cocoa Organization.   World production is expected to be 4.81 million tonnes in the current crop year that began Oct. 1, higher than last year’s 4.64 million tonnes, said Eric Bergman, a vice president at JSG Commodities in Norwalk.   Total grindings in 2018/19 are expected to be 4.69 million tonnes, Bergman said.   Top producer Ivory Coast is in the midst of harvesting what is expected to be a record-large crop.   Output from second-largest producer Ghana appears to be stagnating, but steadily growing production from Ecuador is helping to offset the effects of that stagnation, Bergman said. • KENYA TO ‘BAN PORNOGRAPHIC SITES FOR TEENAGERS’

KENYA TO ‘BAN PORNOGRAPHIC SITES FOR TEENAGERS’

Kenya’s government plans to restrict access to online pornographic sites in a bid to reduce pregnancies among schoolchildren, Information Minister Joseph Mucheru has told the BBC Focus on Africa radio programme.

His comments came amid growing concern in Kenya about teenage pregnancies. Between July 2016 and June 2017, the Kenyan health ministry recorded almost 350,000 pregnancies in the 15 to 19 age group.

He has ordered the communication regulator to see how children and teenagers can be blocked from watching pornographic sites, Mr Mucheru said.

The government would not want to “condone” children and teenagers accessing pornophrapy online, even if it was not linked to pregnancies.
