University of Ghana suspends proposed academic calendar for 2020/2021.

The University of Ghana has suspended its draft Academic Calendar for 2020/2021 academic year over President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s directive on the reopening of tertiary institutions.

In his 18th COVID-19 address on Sunday, October 18, 2020, President Akufo-Addo announced that the 2020/2021 academic year for tertiary institutions will resume in January 2021.

“SHS 2 and JHS 2 students are back in school, as are some students in tertiary institutions and colleges. Indeed, the academic year for new and continuing University students will commence from January 2021,” the President announced.

Management of the University of Ghana earlier proposed to start the 2020/2021 academic year in November.

They proposed that first semester academic activities for Level 200 and Level 400 students was to commence from November 2, 2020, to Friday, December 18, 2020.

They also proposed for first semester academic activities commence for fresh students and level 300 students from February 1, 2021, to March 12, 2021.

But in a notice to students and staff of the University on Wednesday, October 21, 2020, management announced that its earlier calendar, as was “approved by the Business and Executive Committee (BEC) of the Academic Board, at its meeting on Thursday, 10th September 2020, is hereby suspended.”

“Arrangements for the reopening of the University for the 2020-2021 Academic Year will be announced in due course, after the Academic Board/BEC reconvenes,” the notice stated.

Tertiary institutions in the country, especially those that have completed the 2019/2020 academic year, have been waiting for the government to make such an announcement.

Students too have been eager to know when schools will reopen for classes to commence.

During this period of wait, tertiary institutions announced their readiness to commence the 2020/2021 academic year.

Institutions such as the Ghana Institute of Journalism also asked students to start registration formalities for the academic year.

With Akufo-Addo announcing that the 2020/2021 academic year will resume next year, plans by institutions such as the University of Ghana, have been thwarted.

It is unclear what will also happen to institutions such as the C.K Tedam University of Technology and Applied Science as they have already commenced the 2020/2021 academic year.

KENCY2020: GRA went after ‘them’ following the display of luxury.

Musician cum politician, Kwame Asare Obeng popularly known as A Plus has alleged that the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) went after the CEO of Despite Group of Companies following the display of luxury cars at son’s wedding.

The wedding which was dubbed KENCY2020 was tagged as one of the most extravagant weddings in the history of Ghana due to the display of luxury and wealth with the union of Kennedy Asante Osei and Tracy Gyamfua Ameyaw.

A Plus indicated that the move by the nation’s tax agency influenced Ernest Ofori Sarpong brother of Dr Kwame Despite to take a cue by organizing a wedding which didn’t display similar cars at the just ended wedding of his daughter, Cindy Ofori Sarpong in October 2020.

“Do you know the kind of information I have, recently after the wedding (KENCY2020), GRA went after some people…I mean the first wedding. That is how come they didn’t line-up cars in the second wedding,” A Plus told Ola Micheal.

Making his submission in an interview with Ola Micheal on Neat FM on Tuesday, October 21, he intimated that some government appointees are quick to come after people’s wealth.

“Some people think that their government is in power so they can get the car auctioned so they get it, that is why they didn’t display cars in the second wedding,” he added.

  • Marriage should not be all about making babies – Doctor opens.

Marriage should not be all about making babies – Doctor opens.

Community psychologist and lecturer at the University of Ghana Legon, Dr Johnny Andoh-Arthur, has asserted that marriages should not be tagged with the main purpose of bringing forth children.

Discussing the man’s take on the effects of childlessness in a marriage durIng an interview with Nana Yaw Odame on eTV Ghana’s Men’s Lounge show, he observed that childbirth is important, however, in our part of the world, when a married man does not bear any children, society makes him feel inadequate and less of a man.

“Children are important. They are critically important but they are not all that there is to marriage. We live in a society where we’re always inclined towards birth so marriage and procreation are intertwined.

In the men’s world, children index our masculinity so when there are no children, society makes us believe we’re less of men and there are even certain roles that if you do not have a child, you cannot assume”, he said.

According to Dr Johnny, it is the expectation of most men that with the first years of marriage, they should begin to have children and when this does not happen, that is when the frustration begins.

He noted that also due to societal pressure, the men get frustrated so much that they are willing to try any remedy that they see around and this is where fake medicine sellers and fake pastors get the opportunity to exploit their problem for money.
