  • Ghanaians Urged to Demand Holistic Mental Health Policies from Political Candidates Ahead of December Elections

Ghanaians Urged to Demand Holistic Mental Health Policies from Political Candidates Ahead of December Elections

As political parties gear up for the December 7 general elections in Ghana, Bismark Kwabla Kpobi, the Executive Director of the BSK Health Advocacy Foundation, is calling on citizens to prioritize mental health in their evaluation of political candidates. In a recent statement, Kpobi highlighted alarming incidents that underscore the urgent need for comprehensive mental health policies.

One such incident involved a two-year-old child who sustained critical head injuries after being assaulted by an individual with untreated mental illness found on the streets. In another tragic case, an accident victim exhibiting psychological symptoms was abandoned and left to die in a bush near Gomoa Ojobi after being denied appropriate mental health care at Trauma and Specialised Hospital, Winneba.

Mr. Kpobi’s statement emphasizes the neglect and stigmatization faced by individuals with mental illnesses in Ghana. He urges political candidates to present realistic and practical policies aimed at resourcing the Mental Health Authority and advancing mental health care across the nation. Despite the Mental Health Act 846 being enacted in 2012, its full implementation remains pending.

Among the key demands are the establishment of modern mental health hospitals nationwide, increased funding for the Mental Health Authority, and risk allowances for mental health professionals. Kpobi stresses that the nation’s progress is inextricably linked to the mental well-being of its citizens and that addressing mental health issues should not be merely lip service.

Kpobi calls on the media, religious leaders, and other opinion leaders to amplify this demand, urging them to hold political leaders accountable for providing concrete solutions to the mental health crisis in Ghana.

The upcoming elections present an opportunity for Ghanaians to ensure that their future leaders are committed to addressing the mental health needs of the populace. By demanding robust mental health policies, citizens can help foster a society where mental health care is prioritized and individuals with mental illnesses receive the dignity and support they deserve.

By addressing these issues head-on, Ghana can take significant strides towards a more inclusive and supportive environment for all its citizens, ensuring that mental health care is given the importance it warrants in the nation’s political and social agenda.

To mark World Mother’s Day, the Honorable Member of Parliament for North Dayi Constituency, Hon. Joycelyn Tetteh, extended her generosity to Anfoega Catholic Hospital. She took the opportunity to clear all medical bills for mothers and children in the hospital’s wards.

In an effort to improve maternal mental health, Hon. Joycelyn Tetteh donated diapers, soaps, toiletries, soft drinks, and half pieces of cloth to all the mothers in the wards, alleviating their concerns about caring for their children.

Not content with just assisting the patients, Hon. Joycelyn also sought to bring smiles to the faces of the health workers at the hospital. She provided them with motivation, encouraging them to continue delivering excellent healthcare services to the residents of North Dayi Constituency.

The clients, their relatives, and the hospital staff expressed profound gratitude to Hon. MP Joycelyn for her consistent support and timely intervention.

A sum of Fifty-Nine Thousand Ghana Cedis (GHC 59,000.00) was contributed to the school’s management to establish a Learning Resource Center.

This Learning Resource Center is set to be equipped with 10 HP Elite Computers, air conditioners, and other necessary materials. • Ghana Marks World Mental Health Month with a Call to Prioritize Maternal Mental Health

Ghana Marks World Mental Health Month with a Call to Prioritize Maternal Mental Health

As the world observes Mental Health Awareness Month, Ghana joins the global community in recognizing the importance of mental health, particularly maternal mental health, during the perinatal period. Designated as Purple Month in Ghana, this observance aims to provide hope, support, and encouragement to those struggling with mental health disorders.

Maternal Mental Health (MMH) is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a state of well-being in which a mother, during the perinatal period (pregnancy and up to one year after birth), realizes her abilities, copes with normal life stresses, works productively, and contributes to her community. However, despite its significance, MMH remains an overlooked aspect of maternal care.

Statistics from the WHO reveal that approximately 20% (1 in 5) of pregnant women worldwide experience maternal mental health issues, with the prevalence increasing by 13% among women who have just given birth. Shockingly, only 10% of those affected seek help in developing countries like Ghana.

Common Maternal Mental Health conditions include:

    • Baby/Postpartum Blues: Mood swings, tearfulness, and anxiety shortly after childbirth, which usually resolve within a few weeks.
    • Depression: Persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and loss of interest, requiring professional support and treatment.
    • Anxiety: Excessive worrying about the baby or the mother.
    • Postpartum Psychosis: A rare but severe condition characterized by hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized behavior, requiring immediate medical and mental health treatment.

The causes of MMH issues range from biological to socioeconomic factors. Biological factors include changes in hormone levels during and after pregnancy, while psychological factors encompass stress associated with pregnancy, childcare, work, and personal or family history of mental health issues. Additionally, socioeconomic factors such as exposure to violence and abuse, financial issues, relationship problems, and lack of access to healthcare contribute significantly to MMH issues.

Pregnant women with maternal mental health issues may exhibit the following signs and symptoms:

    • Persistent sadness or low mood
    • Anxiety
    • Changes in appetite
    • Social withdrawal or isolation
    • Neglect of personal hygiene for both the mother and the baby
    • Loss of interest in the baby or previously enjoyed activities
    • Irritability or anger with unusual aggression
    • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt
    • Substance abuse
    • Fatigue or loss of energy
    • Thoughts of harming oneself or the baby

It is imperative that maternal mental health be prioritized by the government, families, husbands, and all healthcare professionals. Prompt identification and treatment of MMH issues are crucial in ensuring the well-being of mothers and their babies.

The government must allocate resources to the Mental Health Authority (MHA) to prevent and treat MMH issues effectively. By doing so, Ghana can ensure that mothers receive the support and care they need during and after pregnancy, contributing to the overall health and well-being of families and communities.

Ghanaian Citizen Criticizes Western Influence on Moral Values and Family Systems

Bismark Kwabla Kpobi calls for national sovereignty and independence from European and US pressures

In a passionate address on Ghana’s 67th Independence Day, citizen Bismark Kwabla Kpobi expressed deep concern over what he perceives as undue influence from Western powers on Ghana’s moral values and family systems. Kpobi condemned what he termed “manipulative threats” from so-called superpowers, emphasizing that Ghana should not be swayed by disguised aid that comes with conditionalities aimed at imposing Western values.

Highlighting recent events surrounding discussions on LGBTQ++ rights and foreign aid, Kpobi raised questions about the sovereignty and dignity of the nation. He criticized the Finance Minister’s statement linking loan access to Ghana’s stance on LGBTQ++ rights, citing it as an example of undue pressure from international financial institutions.

Kpobi questioned the fairness of such conditions, particularly when juxtaposed with the obligations of organizations like the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to provide assistance to member countries facing economic distress. He argued that Ghana’s sovereignty should not be compromised in exchange for financial aid, especially when it comes with demands that contradict the country’s cultural and moral values.

The concerned citizen urged Ghanaian youth to resist such impositions and called upon religious and traditional leaders to support the Anti-LGBTQ++ Bill. He emphasized the need for Ghana to mobilize its resources locally and reduce corruption to achieve true independence and development without reliance on foreign loans.

Kpobi’s remarks underscore a growing sentiment among some Ghanaians regarding the influence of Western powers on the nation’s cultural and moral landscape. As the debate on LGBTQ++ rights continues, his call for national sovereignty and resistance to foreign pressures resonates with those who seek to preserve Ghana’s cultural identity and values.

For Kpobi, the time is now for Ghana to assert its independence both physically and mentally, rejecting external influences that threaten its moral and family systems. His impassioned plea reflects a broader conversation within Ghanaian society about the balance between global partnerships and national autonomy in shaping the country’s future.

In conclusion, Kpobi’s message serves as a rallying cry for Ghanaians to stand firm in defense of their cultural heritage and national sovereignty, advocating for policies and actions that prioritize the interests and values of the Ghanaian people above all else.

  • Nogokpo vs Agyin-Asare: Let’s pray through obstacles to new levels of victory – Archbishop

Nogokpo vs Agyin-Asare: Let’s pray through obstacles to new levels of victory – Archbishop

Archbishop Charles Agyinasare, the founder and head of Perez Chapel International, has urged members of the church to continue participating in the one-week fasting and prayers in order to enable them to overcome every obstacle and reach new levels of victory. There are currently 11 days left in the 14-day deadline given by the chiefs and residents of Nogokpo for him to report and engage in peace talks or face their wrath.

On Sunday, June 4, 2023, the church, Perez Chapel International, announced a one-week fast with prayers for all of its members around the world due to the Nogokpo controversy.

Following one of the church’s sermons in which the founder claimed Nogokpo was the “demonic headquarters” of the Volta Region, the church and Archbishop Charles Agyinasare came under fire from a segment of the public.

Native people of Nogokpo demanded that the Archbishop apologize for his remarks, which he did during his service on Sunday, May 28, 2023.

Archbishop Agyinasare clarified during the May 28 service that his remarks were never intended to disparage the residents of Nogokpo or the Volta Region as a whole.

He said that he was merely making reference to an encounter he had there while leading a crusade.

“To emphasize my point, I cited a number of occasions in which I ran into manifestations of demonic powers during my crusades, which took me to more than 92 different nations.

“I gave an example of people who were seeking to levitate during a crusade in India. I gave an example of an attack I suffered as a very young pastor who had gone to preach at a bus stop around Korle Bu.

“In reference to Nogokpo, I wish to clarify that I never intended to refer to the town but an incident that happened after a crusade at Aflao – I had absolutely no intention to cast a slur on the people of Nogokpo town and the Volta Region as a whole,” he explained.

He added, “I have had a cordial relationship with the people of the Volta Region – my wife of 38 years is an Ewe from Keta and two of my biological children bear Ewe names – all the examples I gave were not intended to denigrate any of the towns and their people, but to elucidate the principles of divine protection to congregants.”

Archbishop Agyinasare further apologised for the issues surrounding the statement he made and said he remained committed to serving Ghana as a spiritual leader.

“Any misrepresentations or misinformation that has characterised the subsequent commentary and reportage is regretted – my ministry over the past 40 years has been one that has spoken up at critical times in our nation as a spiritual gatekeeper and I remain committed to serving God’s people and the nation as the spirit directs,” he remarked.

At the Summit held recently at the headquarters of Perez Chapel in Accra, the Archbishop preached about divine protection and the existence of evil forces and cited several examples to support his teaching, where he mentioned Nogokpo as an example of an area where he experienced spiritual forces that worked against a crusade he organised in the area.

On Monday morning, June 5, 2023, three days after the ultimatum given by the chiefs and people of Nogokpo, and a day after the church declared a one-week fasting and prayers, Archbishop Agyinasare encouraged members of the church to continue to join the prayer session.

Embattled Dorfor Chief Hot: ..As Togbe Saho Could not Provide his Gazetted Documents

    By Nana Yaw Cobina

A self- acclaimed Chief of the Dorfor Akata Clan within the North Tongu District of the Volta Region, Togbe Saho is currently hot over his legitimacy as chief of the area.

Even though Togbe Saho claimed to be a gazetted Traditional Leader of the area, he could not mention names of persons who signed his CD forms to support his legitimacy when visited by a team of journalists to testify to his legitimacy. When visited in his residence by the journalists, Torgbe Saho claimed to have documents qualifying him to rule but was unable to prove his knowledge about the Stool.

He could not even provide accurate information about his supposed immediate predecessor and certain documents he ( the Predecessor ) had generated about lines of succession for the Saho Stool and its Kingmakers.

Speaking at a recent press conference to challenge the legitimacy of Togbe Saho at Dorfor, the Stool Father of the Dorfor Akata Clan, Zikpuitor Norvinye Kpornorglo alleged that he did not enstool the supposed Togbe Saho and that he is not a legitimate chief of the area. His claim of being a chief should therefore be disregarded by the general public.

He called on the general public to stop according him with the Togbe Saho name but rather address him by the name Mr. William Kwame Doko. He further stated that Mr. Doko, though a member of the Clan, hails from a family that has been designated the role of Linguists and has only illegally arrogated himself the tittle of Torgbe Saho VI. He said that there is a document which clearly identifies which role he should associate himself with as someone who comes from the Doko/Kufa Family.

“The truth of the matter is Doko’s claim that he has been gazetted is false”, he asserted. He said a search at the Volta Regional House of Chiefs revealed that he has not been gazetted but has illegally started the process of registration . “His claim of being a Chief was challenged at the Volta Regional House of Chief and a ruling was given in 2019 (Suit No. VRP 1/2017) directing both parties, one of whom was William Kwame Doko, to have the matter adjudicated at a nearest properly constituted Traditional Council”, he added. Zikpuitor Norvinye Kpornorglo said Without taken any steps to approach a nearby Traditional Council to have the matter resolved, Mr. Doko clandestinely went behind the other party and the Judicial Committee of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs to start the registration process to have himself registered as a chief in 2020.

  • Conversion Of State Toll Booth into Public Urinals Is A Suicidal Mission in Disguise: Halt That Decision Now

Conversion Of State Toll Booth into Public Urinals Is A Suicidal Mission in Disguise: Halt That Decision Now

    Open Letter To:

    Chief of Staff.

    Minister For Roads And Highways.

    IGP.

    Minister For Health.

The Young mental health Nurse, Bismark Kpobi, have sighted a comment made by the Hon. Minister for Roads and Highways in circulations where he stated that all TOLLBOOTHs across the country will soon be converted into Public Urinals.

However, He must say on authority that that is retrogressive decision and it will be suicidal and homicidal if not halted now.

    Below are some questions we should be asking the minister ;

    1. Will the urinal be used by cars plying the roads ? If yes, do we have spacious areas where all hundreds of cars passing by can stop ,park and the drivers and passengers use the Urinals? Per my assessment across the country, we don’t have such spacious areas where many cars can park for passengers to line up there to ease themselves.

    2. Will the place be used by those passing by on foot, those living by the TOLLBOOTHs,or for the general public? If yes, will the running cars passing stop for people to cross the road to use the Urinals since Weija , Motorway TOLLBOOTHs have many in the middle of the roads?

Per the above questions, it is clear the intentions and decision of the Hon Minister, Kwasi Amoako- Attah, will be dangerous and disastrous and hence should not be tolerated and given the necessary consideration. If we want to provide public Urinals and toilets for the passengers and drivers, then we have many places along the roads that can be utilised other than setting death traps for innocent souls who will be trooping to the roads to ease themselves.

Also, that decision will cause huge traffics the abolishment of the TOLLBOOTHs previously sorted to prevent.Having expatiate my points,

He calls on all discerning citizens and media to add their voices before inevitable accidents start visiting the country.

Thank you for reading this article.
