    Police in Kuntenase in the Ashanti Region have picked up one Rashid Ibrahim for the alleged cold-blooded murder of Israel Agyei Manu, a headteacher of Rogel Montessori Basic School and owner of a private vehicle used for ride-hailing services.

    The 33-year-old who was driving a Toyota Vitz vehicle, with car registration number, GE 3170-21, was beheaded on Sunday afternoon.

    The police in a statement said the suspect “who initially gave an untenable alibi to police, later “confessed to committing the crime.”

    Police said the suspect, Rashid Ibrahim, later led officers “to retrieve the machete which he allegedly used to behead the deceased at Feyiase New Site on 4th July 2021.”

    Some inhabitants of Feyiase Akoyem in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti Region where the incident occurred said they heard a loud cry for help, only to discover a body with the head cut off, with some body parts also missing.

    The suspect is currently in police custody pending processes to be put before the court.

    “Police commend community members who volunteered their observation of the movement of neighbors and strangers alike to police, leading to the arrest. Police assure them of the strictest confidentiality and appeals to such informants to desist from blowing their own cover by bragging about such exploits,” police added in the statement.

    The Assembly Member for the Feyiase Akoyem area, Samuel Yaw Kwae, who earlier narrated the incident to Citi News, said after seeing the headless body, they embarked on a frantic search which led them to the head of the deceased, few meters away from where the headless body was found.

    Police . “I got a call from one of my committee members around 2:05 pm today [Sunday, July 4, 2021] indicating to me that, they have received news of a murder in our community, so I quickly called the police, and they confirmed the news to me. So I had to come and lead them to the scene. When we got there, we met a body without the head.”

    “They [Police] invited the CID to the scene to take all the needed information for investigations. So after that, I recommended to the police that we do a thorough search for the head of the deceased and indeed they listened to me and the people of the community helped me weed the place, and we found the head as well.”

    144 murder cases recorded in the first quarter of 2021 – Interior Minister As of May 2021, a comparative analysis of some crime statistics from the first quarters of 2020 and 2021, showed some improvement in policing except in the area of reported murders.

    According to the Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, there were 144 murder cases recorded in the first quarter of 2021 as compared to 123 in the first quarter of 2020.

    He said the issue needs to be addressed, noting that, “one loss of life in Ghana is one life too many.”

    The Minerals Commission has begun investigations into the mining accident that occurred on Wednesday, May 26, 2021, at Denkyira Breman/Brofoyedu in the Upper Denkyira West District of the Central Region.

    Dozens of miners are reported trapped in the illegal mining pit.

    At least three of the people pulled out of the wreckage have been confirmed dead, including a victim believed to be 10 years old.

    Unconfirmed reports suggest that many of the victims are not residents of the community as none of the residents could identify any of the deceased.

    The Minerals Commission in a statement indicated that it visited the site around 11:00 a.m on the day of the incident, and that its Inspectorate Division has commenced full investigations into it.

    According to the Commission, preliminary investigations indicate that the small-scale miners were working illegally at the site which falls within the prospecting license of Adio-Mabas Ghana Limited.

    This incident comes at a time when government has renewed the fight against all forms of illegal small-scale mining in the country.

    A similar incident occurred in October 2020 where five persons were reported dead after they were trapped in a mining pit in the same district.

    15 others who were also trapped in the cave sustained varied injuries after the incident.

    Also, in November 2020, an illegal small-scale mining pit in the outskirts of Ayanfuri collapsed and trapped eight persons between the ages of 24 and 35 years.

    A life was lost on May 17, 2021 after an underground mining pit which is part of the concession of Anglogold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, caved in and trapped some workers

    NEC compels government over their arrears

    The leadership of the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana, has said that its National Executive Committee (NEC), will come out with a conclusion on a decision to likely call off the strike or go on with it.

    They, (NEC) were emphatic that the decision follows several meetings between the government and the leadership of the Association to set things roght in relation go their concerns.

    Members of the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana on May 18, 2021, resumed their strike to compel the government to pay their tier-2 pension arrears, market premiums, and non-basic allowances, among others.

    NEC COMPELS GOVERNMENT

    In an interview with Citi News, National Chairman of the Association, Zakaria Mohammed, told cities news that his members will remain on strike as they await on the decision of the National Executive Committee, NEC.

    Mr. Zakaria Mohammed also told ciri news that they have been able to reach some agreements with the government on their demands, with a few issues left to be addressed.

    He, therefore, was optimistic that by Wednesday, May 26, 2021, the leadership will agree on the way forward for the strike.

    “We cannot sit here and say we are calling off the strike or not. That decision is supposed to come from the National Executive Council and God willing by Wednesday before mid-day, I am sure we would have concluded on these matters. For now, the strike is still in full force and the compliance level is very high.”

    NEC COMPELS GOVERNMENT

    “The government agreed that there was the need for it to pay the tier-2 pension arrears with interest, but what remains outstanding is how the interest is going to be paid. We also have an outstanding with the government that the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission should be tasked to facilitate the conditions of service of the senior staff of all universities.”

    About the strike
    The Association declared an indefinite strike over the failure of the government to pay their Tier 2 pension.

    Among other things, they are asking for the award of market premium and non-basic allowance as well as the finalization of negotiations of their conditions of service

    The acting Chief Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integrations Martha Pobee is appointed the Assistant Secretary-General for Africa. Ambassador Pobee will be serving in the Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations (DPPA-DPO). She takes up a new assignment as a secretary-general special representative and head of the united nations organization stabilization mission in DR Congo.

    A statement from the UN signed by the secretary-general Antonio Guerres said the Secretary-General is deeply grateful for her service and contributions as the first General Secretary for Africa in DPPA, DPO. Ambassador Pobee has been in the service as the acting Chief Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integrations of the Republic of Ghana since March 2021.
